Veteran journalist Inder Malhotra died at a Delhi hospital on Saturday. He was 86. Malhotra is survived by his painter son Anil Revri. His wife Rekha Malhotra died in 2007. The veteran journalist was on life support for the last few days at Max Hospital, Saket. He went into a deep coma on 8 June and was admitted to the hospital in Delhi. Malhotra began his career with the United Press of India (UPI) and later worked at The Statesman and The Times of India, New Delhi. He also contributed for The Guardian. His publications include Indira Gandhi: A Personal & Political Biography and Dynasties of India And Beyond. He was working on a book Indian Security: Past, Present and Future. He is both a Nehru Fellow (1986-87) and a Woodrow Wilson Fellow (1992-93). He was awarded The Ramnath Goenka Lifetime Achievement award in 2013. Senior journalist Rajdeep Sardesai tweeted: “One of the doyens of political journalism Inder Malhotra passes away. Saw India from Nehru to Modi. RIP.”
Another journalist Chandan Mitra tweeted: “I am blessed to have been guided by Inder Malhotra at The Statesman, my 1st job. He was a 24×7 journalist, a pillar of 4th Estate. RIP Inder.”
President Pranab Mukherjee too expressed his condolences on Malhotra’s death.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday described eminent journalist Inder Malhotra as a “stalwart” of journalism and expressed sadness at his death.
