Lego has done it again! Not only have they in the past gender stereotyped girls, they have now also started to give them beauty tips.
Lego has in the past received a solid bashing for their not so feminist reputation. But they did create a popular set of female scientist minifigs last year, but only after they were voted for by the public.
Back in 2012, the company launched Lego Friends , an extremely girly range which showcased women who do next to nothing – in contrast to their ranges aimed at boys, which are all about engineering and creativity. But don’t worry, Lego has not only told girls they’re not as creative as boys but they’re now also giving them beauty tips from girls who hang out at the Heartlake Hair Salon and sail through Heartlake Lake on the Dolphin Cruiser.
Seriously, nobody wants to see an ugly five year old, right?
Sharon Holbrook first spotted the beauty tips in her 7-year-old daughter’s magazine and wrote about it for Motherlode, a parenting blog on the New York Times.
Children are told by the oval-faced Lego “Friend” Emma that little girls with square faces need a haircut to “soften the edges of your face” while the long-faced girls can get a haircut to “help their face appear slightly shorter.”
While “oval faces can often have almost any style haircut because almost everything looks great on this face shape!” A bit too much to be telling girls of five isn’t it?
