Forget the good-ol’ Archiekins you remember. He has changed and so have his pals — Jughead, Betty, Veronica, Reggie, Moose.
Reports said that the creators of Archie who usually write and draw the books will not be doing it anymore. Instead, award-winning writer of superheroes such as Captain America and the Flash, Mark Waid, will be writing the new series of the comic.
So, you will not be seeing the affable freckle-faced Archie but a suave American teenager who has a crooked smile and – lets be honest – looks kinda hot! But is it right to mess with the cute, next-door-boy Archie Andrews.
This article in the Maclean’s said that Archie will not only undergo a facelift, the plot of the comic books will change considerably too.
“Now the comics get into the news for stunts such as Archie’s death in an alternative universe; a serious horror story, the zombie dystopia Afterlife with Archie, is a bestseller as a monthly comic and trade paperback; and the company has made development deals that could get it closer to the holy grail of the modern comics industry: a TV or movie adaptation.”
The article noted how Archie-style of comic was archaic and the franchise had stopped innovating. So much so that even the lettering has not changed much and it followed the traditional comics rule and ends every sentence with an exclamation mark.
But the original creators stuck to that age-old format for a reason. “The best Archie stories are the ones that are very often rooted in a very small story. Like, Archie’s mother sends him to buy two pies and, of course, everyone gets hit in the face with pies.”
Although, as the article, noted short-comedy forms or stories are no more getting noticed. It is all about the big bucks and companies want to invest in stories that get into the news – like Marvel or DC. This also means that from a young audience who just wanted funny stories, Archie will now metamorphose into something of a book that can actually hold people’s attention till the next issue.
However, we fans can only wait till the new edition of Archie launches to see whether the changed Riverdale and a suave and sexy Archie is better than the original.
