Leonardo DiCaprio donated two million dollars for the conservation of oceans and marine wildlife. Reuters[/caption] The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation donated two million dollars to Oceans 5, a global collaborative to protect the marine ecosystem, according to this report in TechTimes. “Oceans 5 is an exciting new platform for marine conservation. Working together with other philanthropists, we are making smarter, more impactful investments for the future of our planet. My Foundation supports Oceans 5 projects that are directly improving ocean health by stopping overfishing and creating marine reserves,” said DiCaprio in the report. This is not the first time that DiCaprio, who is known for his contribution to efforts for environment conservation, donated money for marine conservation. The ‘Titanic’ and ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ star had earlier pledged to donate 7 million dollars from his foundation to marine conservation projects for the next two years. DiCaprio, 39, made the big announcement at the State Department ‘Our Ocean’ conference on 16 June. “Since my very first dive in the Great Barrier Reef in Australia 20 years ago to the dive I got to do in the very same location just two years ago, I’ve witnessed environmental devastation firsthand,” he had said. The ‘Shutter Island’ star added, “What once had looked like an endless underwater utopia is now riddled with bleached coral reefs and massive dead zones.” The actor who dreamt of becoming a marine biologist further added, “What we need is sustained activism and courageous political leadership. We cannot afford to be bystanders in this pre-apocalyptic scenario. This isn’t simply an exercise in wildlife conservation. If we don’t do something to save the ocean now, it won’t be just the sharks and the dolphins that suffer. It will be our children and our grandchildren.” DiCaprio has also been awarded the Clinton Global Citizen Award for his environmental work. Moreover, the UN recently named DiCaprio as an official representative on climate change and called him a ‘messenger of peace’. DiCaprio also gave a speech at the United Nations on climate change.
