After golgappa and Narendra Modi, if there’s anything that can perhaps leave Americans fumbling for words, it has to be an Indian television news debate. No prizes for guessing which one.
So BuzzFeed rounded up a bunch of Americans and sent them a video of the now-infamous spat between Arnab Goswami and Subhramanian Swamy. Unfortunately, the only thing remotely funny or interesting about the exercise is the exchange between Goswami and Swamy. Because none of the people who signed up for the exercise seemed either thrilled or amused to have seen the video. And if they did, they weren’t, in the lack of better words, fun to watch.
One girl giggled continuously and then managed to say, “I would have totally watched American news if it was this hilarious.”
Pointing at one person in the panel who kept silent throughout the clip shown to them, one man said, “I think he is made of wax.”
Referring to the same man another guy said, “He has seen, like, other country’s news and knows this is farce.”
Others revel at Subramaian Swamy’s scream-fest. One of the men said, “I wish he were my dad.”
Towards the conclusion of the video, one woman, freaks out when she is told that Swamy studied at Harvard University.
In fact, some of the people seem to have been told by the BuzzFeed India team that that this particular episode of Newshour was representative of the Indian news industry and journalism. This is apparent from the fact that commentators kept discussing the ‘Indian news channels’ versus ‘American news channels’ debate from just this one video.
Watch ‘Americans trying Indian desserts for the first time’ instead.
