Beginning this week, Firstpost has a new show called “First Lady”. On “First Lady”, host Meghna Pant meets with women achievers from all walks of life, and her roster of illustrious guests begins with Paralympian heroine Deepa Malik. In a conversation with Meghna (you can follow the full chat in the video above), Deepa talks about how she came to terms with her physical disability, and transformed it into an ability. Deepa talks to Meghna about how she overcame obstacles to get to where she is today — beginning with the sacrifices she had to make to get onto the long road to recovery, how she perfected her medal-winning turn at the Rio 2016 Paralympics and more. Meghna also asked Deepa on what her ‘happiness mantra’ is — what kept her sanguine through the tough time when she sustained her life-altering injury, even as her husband was fighting in the Kargil War at the time, her younger daughter was just three, and the older one had herself been in an accident. “The only thing I’ve done differently, after being ‘differently abled’ is that I do not allow myself to be low for a longer time,” said Deepa, on how she manages to keep up her cheerful demeanour. Deepa also addressed Meghna’s question about the prejudices she had to fight not just as a para athlete, but also a woman, with a lot of candour. And admitted that being an adrenaline junkie was one way to escape the monotony of life — although each of her endeavours have a purpose of raising awareness.
