Electronic expert and Avengers member: All you need to know about the Ant Man
This is a breakdown of the comic book character, the depiction in the movie might differ, although we have tried to keep it relevant to the Friday release.
After much ado, the silver screen version of Marvel's Ant Man is here.
Paul Rudd stars as the ant-sized superhero in the movie directed by Peyton Reed (Yes Man), who took over the project after Edgar Wright departed over creative differences.
The film has recived mostly positive reviews and is expected to do good commercially too. But just like Marvel's 2014 Guardians of the Galaxy, not many people are familiar with the characters of this franchise.
So here is all you need to know about the Ant Man before you hit the theaters this weekend.
(Warning: This is a breakdown of the comic book character, the depiction in the movie might differ, although we have tried to keep it relevant to the Friday release.)
Ant Man! Seriously, Ant Man?
Created by David Michelinie and John Byrne, Scott Edward Harris Lang first (our Ant Man) made and appearance in Avengers #181 in 1979. The same year, he first appeared as Ant-Man in Marvel Premiere #47.
An electronic expert, Lang turns to burglary to support his family. However, he still finds it hard to make ends meet. He also ends up in prison.
After he is granted bail, things seem to be improving for him. Stark International's design department hires him. But the shirt good run comes to an abrupt end when his diagnosed with a serious heart condition.
A desperate Lang seeks the help of micro surgeon Dr Erica Sondheim. The surgeon, however gets kidnapped by Cross Technological Enterprises founder Darren Cross (played by Corey Stollin the movie), our obligatory mutated villain. Cross does it to have Sondheim help him with his own heart condition.
To rescue Sondheim, Lang breaks into the home of Dr. Henry Pym (played by Michael Douglas in the movie), the first Ant-Man (Lang is the second), and steals his technology (Ant Man suit). Taking the Ant-Man mantle, Scott uses his new found power to defeat Cross and rescue the doctor (and subsequently save his daughter).
Impressed by his abilities, Pym lets him keep the suit.
The (not so) Ant size superpowers:
Ant Man has the ability to shrink to roughly the size of an ant (duh!). He can communicate telepathically with insects with the help of his specially designed helmet, and when in his ant size, gains extraordinary physical powers.
Although, all his superpowers come from the suit, Lang has one other power: he is super funny.
Ant Man has been a part of the Avengers team and fought alongside the core members on several occasions. So, get ready to see him make an appearance in the next Avengers movie.
He has also been featured alongside the Fantastic Four. As Marvel gears up for a Fantastic Four reboot in August, a mashup can be expected in the future.
Heroes for Hire, a superhero team in the Marvel universe also features Ant Man.
So, as Calvin Candie would put it, if Ant Man has your attention and you would like to explore the comic books, Comic Book Resources has a list to get you stared here.
