This would shatter a few dreams, make a few of us very happy and give sadistic pleasure to all those who could not make it to the IITs. After all, what’s more entertaining than the crème de la crème of India’s student community, cribbing out the elite educational institution? Check out this thread on Quora.com for evidence of the same. A question, posted on Quora, went viral and it was hardly surprising when this was one of the topics trending on social media. “What things make you feel ashamed that you are an IITian?” is the question we are talking about_._ [caption id=“attachment_1724993” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] Students at IIT Delhi. AFP[/caption] The answers varied from being hilarious and serious to mildly amusing and sometimes brutally truthful. Some of the answers, (28 of them were posted on the Quora thread) bared what some students feel like being an IITian: surprise, surprise, they don’t think it’s a big deal at all! It might be a ray of hope for the non-IITians who keep thinking they might be missing out on the best experience in the world. For instance, one Deepak Dilipkumar, who described himself as ‘always confused’, said: “It’s a vicious cycle. People who do things diligently and punctually are called “muggus” and are ridiculed by their friends. This dissuades them from working efficiently, and they too end up indulging in the so-called “culture” of procrastination.” A freshman at IIT Bombay, Harshit Sahay summarises all that is wrong with IITs in 5 bullet points. They are - indolence, attitude towards girls, lack of motivation, stereotypes and senior fundaes (you have to be an IIT-ian to understand that one). Harshit said: “They are, more or less, a collection of different people from different backgrounds, with different characteristics, providing a very good sample space for analyzing societal patterns. Barring the sex ratio, they are really good models of a average community and hence everything that is wrong outside, is wrong here as well.” It is funny to read about those, who are considered to be the ‘chosen ones’, wallow in such loathing and self despair as this one: ““Almost every other guy at an IIT thinks that he/she is something special just because he/she could clear an entrance examination which majority couldn’t… This just makes me sad, and ashamed of being an IITian. IITians need to learn some humility.” However, a questioned that was meant to be fun, offended some people too. For example one Saumya Ghildiyal, a newbie to Quora, who said: “What a ridiculous question! why would anyone be ashamed of being an iitan! & its so sad that so many iitans answered it! Sad indeed! The person who asked this question should be ashamed of himself/herself!” However, humour and offense aside, the post showed how the IITs are victims of problems faced by other educational institutions in the country as well. The following post summed it up: “The fact that there are so many stupid questions related to being an IITian and the IIT’s. It feels pathetic when so many IITians want to answer or even post questions on “how it feels to be an IITian?”,“What is the difference between an IITian and a non-IITian?“etc. Seriously are we so pathetic that we need an ego boost from the internet being worshiped even when we haven’t achieved anything significant.”
