After reports and many pieces bemoaning how much less meaning life would have thanks to its absence, the makers of Old Monk rum have attempted to put the rumours to rest saying that the spirit isn’t vanishing off liquor shop shelves any time soon. A Times of India report quoted SN Maingi, deputy general manager at Mohan Meakin, as saying that sales had only dropped in a handful of states and that despite the rumours, the rum wasn’t going anywhere. [caption id=“attachment_2343130” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] Facebook image[/caption] Maingi also pointed out that despite no advertising the rum was still doing just fine and that they are even planning variants of the spirit to expand into new markets. He blamed falling sales on ’liquor cartels’ in some states. Much has been written and said since reports indicated that the rum brand could dying a slow death across the country due to falling sales. From changing drinking habits to women not favouring it, a variety of sociological reasons had been blamed for the rum’s falling popularity. There were also posts on the best things the rum went best with, apart from colas, and even how to bid it an appropriate farewell. Hopefully Maingi’s denial will put the premature mourning to rest.
