Gun Island follows the story of protagonist Deen Dutta, a dealer in rare books who spends much of his time indoors, until circumstances lead to a shift in his beliefs and he is forced to embark upon an extraordinary journey. His travels take him from India to Los Angeles to Venice in a tangled route interspersed with memories and experiences as he encounters Piya, a fellow Bengali-American; Tipu, an entrepreneurial young man; Rafi, with his desperate attempt to help someone in need; and Cinta, an old friend, who provides the missing link in the story they are all a part of.
The Padma Shri awardee has previously authored eight novels with the 1986 work The Circle of Reason marking his debut. He has also authored several non-fiction books such as In An Antique Land, The Imam and the Indian and his most recent work, The Great Derangement: Climate Change and the Unthinkable. Some of his notable fictional works include The Glass Palace, The Shadow Lines, and The Calcutta Chromosome. Ghosh was born in Kolkata and grew up in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and India. His works often carry a whiff of Kolkata and the experiences of those who inhabit this vibrant city.
His latest novel, Gun Island marks his ninth novel. It will be published by Penguin India in the country in 2019.
