4Chan users now say they never threatened to leak Emma Watson's nude pics

Update: The story of "the Emma Watson nude pics threat" has gotten a fresh twist. It is now clear that the countdown website that threatened to post nude pictures of actress was actually not by started by 4Chan's anonymous users but rather by a social media company called Rantic. If you go on the EmmaYouarenext website now, you'll see that the group actually aims to shut down 4Chan.

According to the post on the site, Rantic claims to "have been hired by celebrity publicists to bring this disgusting issue to attention. The recent 4chan celebrity nude leaks in the past 2 months have been an invasion of privacy and is also clear indication that the internet NEEDS to be censored. Every Facebook like, share & Twitter mention will count as a social signature -- and will be one step closer to shutting down www.4chan.org."

The company is also supporting a Twitter hashtag called #ShutDown4Chan. Given how popular 4Chan is, this is obviously one Internet battle that has a very low chance of success and could also turn very ugly for Rantic.

Interestingly as this Jezebel posts points out anonymous users on 4Chan are saying that nobody had even threatened to leak Emma Watson's nude pictures.  The post points to one comment which says, "I know there are several journalists lurking /pol/ - so I just want to say, when these Emma Watson nudes come out, IT IS NOT 4CHAN. This is a false flag by /whichever agency/, probably NSA or something. "

Another comment reads, "Thanks for listening. Oh, if by some rare fluke Emma Watson is reading this - many on 4chan respect what you're doing as a moderate, balanced feminist and we don't hate you like we hate the SJW's"

Irrespective of the current story, it can't be forgotten that first celebrity nude pics that leaked, 4Chan's anonymous hackers had a role to play. Rantic is definitely over the top in their hatred for 4Chan, but for now the users of the site have redeemed themselves slightly.

There seems to be no end in sight to the celebrity hacking nightmare. After hackers posted naked pictures of top Hollywood actresses like Jennifer Lawrence, Kaley Cuoco, Rihanna to name a few, it seems there is a new target now. According to a report on BusinessInsider, Harry Potter star Emma Watson is facing threats with a 4Chan user creating a website with a countdown site which hints that he will release naked photographs of the British actress in close to 4 days.

The website has a picture of Emma Watson crying and a countdown timer with the 4chan logo. A message on the bottom of the site reads "Never forget, the biggest to come thus far", adds the report.

As far as the previous hacking is concerned, it was blamed on an Apple iCloud vulnerability. Apple had responded to the charges saying that the hackers obtained nude photos of Jennifer Lawrence and other female celebrities by pilfering images from individual accounts rather than through a broader attack on the company's services. According to Apple, the hackers had breached individual accounts and didn't obtain general access to a pair of the company's services — iCloud and Find my iPhone.

In the Emma Watson case, it's unclear if her account too has been hacked by this group of users who are hell-bent on leaking nude pictures of female celebrities. However the Business Insider report notes, this site could also be a prank and that "Fake countdown sites are a classic tactic for internet pranksters."

Meanwhile this report on Jezebel points out that Watson is getting targeted for a pro-feminist speech that she gave at the United Nations.

The reports quotes that some of the comments on the 4Chan board read, "That feminist bitch Emma is going to show the world she is as much of a whore as any woman... she makes stupid feminist speeches at UN, and now her nudes will be online, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH."

The pictures may not have been leaked but given that more actresses have been targeted in the recent page including Johnny Depp's fiancé Amber Heard, the hacking scandal is unlikely to come to an end.

As we had noted in this earlier piece, this hacking was just another form of cyber abuse. While misogynists mights argue that the actresses have no right to privacy since some of them might have appeared nude in their films, the fact that the someone felt the need to hack into personal phones, iPads etc to get to these images is plain wrong.

The hacking story is particularly ironical since some of these same people who leaked and later shared pictures of the actresses were probably outraged over the NSA privacy violation leaks.

Below is the YouTube video of the Emma Watson speech at the UN that seems to have upset some of those who were commenting on 4Chan. As you can see, she rightly points out that where feminism is concerned, it's about equality between men and women, and not man-hating, adding that feminism has become a hated word.

She also points out that it's not an entirely crazy idea to expect that women and men be paid equally and that women have rights over their own bodies. The latter is something that the hackers don't intend to acknowledge given they want to release her naked pictures.
