The finance minister has a trick or two when it comes to meeting the ever expanding fiscal deficit. He will confine it around budgeted target, even if it means delaying income tax refunds. According to thisstory, the FM is planning to hold back income tax refunds worth Rs 1 lakh or above to make good for lower-than-expected tax revenue. But if you are someone who has still not heard from the IT department, and wonder whatever happened to your refund, here are five easy steps to follow:
The assumption is you have filed return on time and also expect a refund amount.

Step 1: Visit either this or this website. So, in short go to Tax Information Network of IT department or
Step 2: Click the link ‘status of tax’; provide your permanent account number and the assessment year.
Step 3: If for some reason you don’t get the status send an email to refunds@incometaxindia.gov.in, with all relevant details.
Step 4: Alternatively, you could call this number 1-800-4259760 and check the status. This number is of State Bank of India, which is a refund banker for the IT department.
Step 5: If this does not help either, you will have to visit your local income tax office. You could get more information about the address of the local office here.
Remember, if you have given your bank details for refund purposes on the income tax returns form, the amount would be directly credited to your account, and you would be intimated by the income tax department via an SMS. If you have not given the details, you would get a check at your address of correspondence.
However, there is nothing much you can do when it comes to the IT department apart from wait. And if your refund amount Rs 1 lakh or more, may be wait longer.
