“Women’s Reservation Bill will enhance the dignity of women as well as equality of opportunities,” said Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal as he moved the quota bill for consideration and passage in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. “This Bill will enhance the dignity of women as well as equality of opportunities. Women will get representation,” the minister said. The Bill has been named Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. “This is a Constitution Amendment Bill and a crucial Bill. This is a step towards women empowerment, and one guiding the world,” he added.

“Today’s Bill will uplift women’s prestige and also bring equality in opportunities,” the law minister said in his address as he listed out the four clauses of the Women’s Reservation Bill in the House.

The Women’s quota Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed 19 September a “historic day” and urged Opposition parties to pass the bill. Tabling the Bill in the House, the law minister on Tuesday explained that once the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam is passed, the number of seats for women in the Lok Sabha will increase to 181. What does the Women’s Reservation Bill proposes? The Bill proposes 33 per cent representation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. After the debate, the bill is likely to be passed in the Lok Sabha later on Wednesday. It will come into effect only after a delimitation exercise is completed and is therefore unlikely to be in force during the next Lok Sabha election in 2024. With inputs from agencies
