American Centre officials later described the meeting as a courtesy call with the chief minister.

"The meeting was scheduled for quite a while. She does these meetings in various states on a rotational basis," the officials said.

After meeting US consulate officials and spending some time at the American Centre here, Powell, who arrived here yesterday, will leave the city this evening.

In May, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had met Banerjee at her office where a number of issues were
discussed.
