Reader Debate: Other than in festivals, no intellectual class in India

Our commenters, wrote us some strong, smart comments to the article titled – Why must intellectuals be second-class citizens? – which we have now published as a separate post. They point that the crisis is not about a particular class because there is no intellectual class that exists in the country except at glamorous festivals glorifying the intellect.

Most comments instead lay the blame of the present crisis on political impunity and vote bank politics pursued by political parties in the country.

As is our policy, we have edited out a few sentences that were directed at the author.

Jhor: It is not just intellectuals who are second class citizens. Everybody who is not a politico or is irrelevant to election mathematics is second class - salaried workers, shop keepers and small tradesmen, teachers, law abiding citizens, housewives, everybody is a second class citizen under UPA rule.

Reader Debate: Other than in festivals, no intellectual class in IndiaOnly thugs/politicos get heard. The vast majority of our voting class who cast votes for the divisive political parties are heard once in 5 years for a few days - too little for any lasting change. They are 3rd class citizens.

To me, he [Rushdie] is a symbol that pseudo-intellectuals conveniently use for their meaningless banter. Whether he comes to India or not, whether he addresses the Lit Fest or not is irrelevant. The real problem is the 99% of us are second class or third class citizens of India.

Satan's Pride:  Because intellectual in this country want to portray  themselves as liberals they are a directionless bunch who are part of the bandwagon which rides around the 'Think Fests' at luxury hotels. They are the elitist cretins who are extremely proficient at entangling themselves into the web of chimerical pursuits rather than implement a pragmatic scheme.

Braveheart: For people comparing MF Hussain case with Salman Rushdie case, there are a few differences between the two: Satanic Verses came out in 1988.  At that time, it was said that if Rushdie apologises the fatwa will be retracted. Ayatollah went back on his word and said fatwa will remain intact

On February 19 Khomeini's office replied The imperialist foreign media falsely alleged that the officials of the Islamic Republic have said the sentence of death on the author of The Satanic Verses will be retracted if he repents. Imam Khomeini has said:

This is denied 100%. Even if Salman Rushdie repents and become the most pious man of all time, it is incumbent on every Muslim to employ everything he has got, his life and wealth, to send him to Hell.

Coming to MF Hussain's case, he was never asked to leave the country. There was huge hue and cry over the issue and many cases were filed against him in various courts. Seeing all this he chickened out and decided to leave the country. Nobody forced him to leave India.
During this whole period, he never apologised for hurting anybody's sentiments.

In fact , it had come to a point , where he was only asked to apologise and whole thing would have been settled , but this man choose not to apologise.

Vijay Patel: Congress has sent a message to UP Muslim, "Muslim will have freedom to terrorise any organisation if they vote for Congress". It's waking up time for so called secularist.
