Ram Nath Kovind takes over President of India Twitter handle, gets three million followers

Within minutes of taking oath as the 14th President of India, Ram Nath Kovind and his team were given access to the official Twitter handle @RashtrapatiBhvn. His profile shows that he has over three million followers and follows only President Pranab Mukherjee.

Meanwhile, Mukherjee's tweets have been archived with the Twitter handle @POI13.

Mahima Kaul, Twitter's Head of Public Policy, wrote in a blog post, "What's happening in India and around the world, happens on Twitter. Today, we are paving the way for the digital transition of the President of India's official account. A smooth transition between administrations is one of President Pranab Mukherjee's top priorities, and digital is a key pillar in today's internet age. The new president, Ram Nath Kovind, will now use the official President of India account @RashtrapatiBhvn. As President Pranab Mukherjee is the 13th President of India, his official Twitter account history will be archived with the handle @POI13."

Kovind's first tweet read, "Honoured to be sworn in as the 14th President of India." Some of the photos of his swearing in have also been tweeted out.

Kovind was sworn in as the 14th President of India on Tuesday, becoming the first BJP leader and the second Dalit in the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Kovind was administered the oath of office to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution and law" by Chief Justice of India JS Khehar in an impressive ceremony at the Central Hall of Parliament.
