Piyush Goyal given additional charge of Finance Ministry, likely to present Union Budget 2019 in Arun Jaitley's absence

Jaitley was admitted to AIIMS in early April, 2018, following which he underwent dialysis. In his absence, Goyal was given the additional charge of Finance Ministry on 14 May.

Minister of Railways Piyush Goyal was given additional charge of Finance Ministry and named temporary finance minister, a Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesperson said on Wednesday.

During the period of Arun Jaitley's absence due to medical check up in the US relating to his kidney ailment, portfolio of finance minister will be assigned to Goyal, in addition to his existing portfolios, CNBC-TV18 reported.

Goyal will likely present the Union Budget 2019, which will be the sixth and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA government's last budget on 1 February before the general election.

On 15 January, Jaitley unexpectedly left for the US for a medical check up. He had undergone a renal transplant surgery on 14 May, 2018 and had not traveled abroad in last nine months.

Jaitley was admitted to AIIMS in early April, 2018, following which he underwent dialysis. In his absence, Goyal was given the additional charge of Finance Ministry on 14 May.
