P Chidambaram 'opened all doors' for favourable companies during UPA rule, says Ravi Shankar Prasad

Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Monday launched a scathing attack on the Congress party and former finance minister P Chidambaram for allegedly opening 'all doors' for the favourable companies including Mehul Choksi's Geetanjali Gems in Gold Scheme.

Addressing a press conference at BJP headquarters in Delhi, Prasad said, “On 15 May, 2014, P Chidambaram announced a new policy in which Star Trade Operators were attached to premium trading houses which included Gitanjali Jewelers. They opened all doors for favourable companies. Those who have been prohibited from participating 80/20 scheme were brought in”.

"These trading houses were allowed to import gold up to 2,000 kg from any port of India. There was no control or verification. This is a downright racket," the Union law minister alleged.

He also alleged that the scheme, which was introduced in August 2013 and then repealed in November 2014, was passed on 15 May, 2014”.

“Why was such a big step taken by the then UPA govt just one day before the General Elections results?” Prasad asked.

"We charge with the full sense of responsibility that under extraordinary pressure of vested interests P Chidambaram took the decision a day before the election results", he added.

He called this move as the “textbook case” of massive irregularity under the UPA government.

On Monday, Prasad had alleged that Chidambaram had granted ranted seven private firms, including scam-accused Gitanjali Gems, gold import benefits asking the Congress how much "cut" was given to whom for the decision.
