Nigerian man alleges racism after police raids three-year-old son's birthday party

In yet another case of jumping the gun and power abuse, the Maharashtra police on Sunday halted the birthday party of a Nigerian couple's three-year-old son... and ate his cake.

The Arnala police halted the party of Stanley and Blessed Akande's three-year-old son Trevor, in the Oasis resort-cum-farmhouse at Rajhodi, around 9 km from Virar, reports The Times of India.

Akande, a textile exporter, lives with his wife and son in Virar. For the party at Oasis Resort, they had invited around 30 guests. "The cops could find only one-and-a-half bottle of liquor worth Rs 825. They frisked us for drugs but found nothing. We were forced to cut the cake — which was eaten by the cops — at around 11.15 pm. They did not allows us to arrange for taxis for our guests, who were forced to walk all the way," DNA quotes Akande saying.

The couple has been living on rent in a portion of the farmhouse for the past five years. Trevor was born in Virar and holds an Indian passport.

Alleging racism on part of the cops, the 38-year-old said, "The cops told me that 'if I was not black, I would have never asked to leave'. I was celebrating my three-year-old son's birthday. They not only asked us to leave but forced us to cut the cake before time and ate it too."

After the raid, the police arrested Rohit Patole's (23), his mother Mayur Patole (40), who owns the resort, and Arjun Yadav (30), a daily wage labourer, under sections of Bombay Prohibition Act, reports another DNA report.

Confirming the action and rubbishing allegations, Sandeep Shiwale, in-charge of Arnala Coastal police station, said, "We had made three arrests under relevant sections of Bombay Prohibition Act. They were produced before Vasai court, where they were released on bail," said Shiwale.
