NDA always compromised with terrorists; ineffective diplomacy to blame for China's stand on Masood Azhar: Congress

New Delhi: The Congress on Friday accused the BJP of "compromising" with internal security whenever in power and said its "ineffective" diplomacy has led to China once again blocking the move to list Masood Azhar as a global terrorist by the UN.

Party spokesperson RPN Singh cited the example of Azhar saying he is the same person who was released by the previous NDA government in 1999 in Kandahar.

"They have always compromised with terrorists. The BJP has neither the policy nor the intent to act against terrorists and terrorism. We urge the government to act strongly against wanted terrorists like Dawood Ibrahim, Masood Azhar and those 60 terrorists in the list provided to Pakistan by the previous UPA regime," he told reporters.

He said China never used that kind of veto power in the UN when the UPA was in power as the Congress-led government's used international diplomatic pressure on it and managed to "isolate" Pakistan on the issue of terrorism.

He asked where that kind of diplomacy was now, adding Prime Minister Narendra Modi was touting before elections that his government will arrest Ibrahim after bringing him back but never took any action.

Singh said that the BRICS summit joint statement declaring the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) among groups responsible for committing, organising or supporting terrorist acts was "hailed as a big diplomatic victory by the Modi government".

"BJP's ineffective diplomacy compromised India's internal security," he said.

Singh said the BJP's hallmark has been 'false bravado, chest thumping and hyperbole' and that is there on national security too.

He said "this is the same Azhar Masood, who was released by this government".

"If you see their history, the have always done a compromise with terrorists and terrorism.

"In 3.5 years, no action has been taken and one has seen how BJP leaders attended a marriage in Mumbai and Dawood Ibrahim's wife came to Mumbai and left, but government did not take any action and never gave any report on her visit," Singh said.

The Congress leader said ever since the BJP government came to power, there have been attacks on military establishments in Jammu and Kashmir and several jawans and civilians have been killed.

He said on the international fora, this government has also provided an opportunity to the ISI, which has masterminded attacks on India, this government invited them to carry out a probe on the Pathakot attack.

To another question whether the Congress has any action plan since it criticises the government over internal security, Singh said that is something for the external affairs ministry to look into.

"When we were in government, we put international pressure on various countries regarding Hafiz Sayeed, and the American government released a 10 million bounty on him and that was something because of the international and foreign policy.

"We managed to isolate Pakistan completely. It found itself completely alone and China was not using that kind of veto regularly saving a terrorist which are having a safe heaven in Pakistan," he said.

China on Thursday had for the fourth time blocked the bid to list Pathankot terror attack mastermind Azhar as a global terrorist by the UN, saying "there is no consensus" within the members of the sanctions committee.
