There were talks of cabinet expansion for the past several months amid speculation that Prime Minister Narendra Modi could induct new faces from Uttar Pradesh which is going to polls next year.

Modi had earlier met Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Amit Shah and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to discuss the issue.
