In the backdrop the riots in Muzaffarnagar Uttar Pradesh police have discovered AK-47 cartridges during search operations in Kirthal village in Baghpat. According to a report, the police suspect that the assault rifles could have been used by rioters during the recent violence that broke out last week.
"During the search in the affected areas, 41 AK 47 cartridges, 17 9mm cartridges, 1 cartridge of a country made pistol, 1 gun and other weapons were recovered after the police reached on the spot following reports of tension between two communities," CNN-IBN quoted UP police, ADG Arun Kumar as saying.
Such cartridges, according the police, can also be used in making country-made weapons.
Meanwhile, the death toll in the communal clashes has risen to 48.
CNN-IBN reported that ADG said they was caught unawares after finding the cartridges of assault rifles being found in Muzaffarnagar.
Kumar said that the search operations will continue and the investigations will be carried on to ascertain how these cartridges that are only available to the Army and police, were available in the riot-hit area.
Sectarian violence started when some people pelted stones at a bus carrying people to a “mahapanchayat”. Elders of two religious groups were meeting to sort out the simmering tension between Jats, a farming community, and Muslims ever since three youth were killed 27 August over a case of stalking, allegedly of a Jat Hindu girl by a Muslim youth.
Around 1500 people have been arrested and curfew in Muzaffarnagar was relaxed from 12 noon to 5 pm today.
