More than a week after an 80-year old Sikh man was brutally assaulted, the London Police on Sunday arrested an unemployed 19-year old teenage girl for the attack. Coral Millerchip, from Attoxhall Road in Wyken, was charged with assaulting the 80-year-old and will be produced before the Coventry Magistrates Court later today. According to the Coventry Telegraph , Millerchip was arrested from an address outside of the West Midlands after police traced her to Gloucester. The attack, apparently unprovoked, occurred near a bus station in Coventry’s Trinity Street at around 8:30 pm on 10 August. The police made the arrest after a video, shot by a passer-by, met with a wave of revulsion on the web. The elderly victim was punched in the face and shoved to the ground leaving him with a bloodied nose and black eye, media reports said. He was later taken to a hospital for treatment. The London Police is treating the attack as a serious malicious wounding, punishable with up to five years in prison. In India, the ruling SAD in Punjab and the apex religious body SGPC has described the attack as a shameful example of hate crime and urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take up the matter with the UK government at the earliest. “The attack is unfortunate and horrifying. It has shaken the Sikh community across the world,” SAD secretary and spokesperson Daljit Singh Cheema said. The issue created waves on social media as well with a page titled ‘Name & Shame: Coral Millerchip’ condemning the attack, on Facebook, already liked by over 3,000.
