Ladakh officer-jawan clash: Court punishes 3 Majors for beating jawan

New Delhi: An army court has awarded punishment to three Major-rank officers for allegedly assaulting a jawan in Ladkah in 2012, which had led to a major clash between officers and jawans of the artillery regiment. The clash, which took place in May 2012, was reportedly started after the three officers allegedly assaulted the jawan in Nyoma during a field exercise. General Court Martial has awarded the punishment to the three officers for their alleged role in the officer-jawan clash, sources said here. The punishment recommended for these officers has not yet been confirmed by the competent Army authorities and there may even be change in that, Army Headquarters said. Reuters[/caption]The three officers had allegedly assaulted the jawan after they felt that he was trying to molest the wife of one of these officers. The presence of wives of officers was also found to be a violation of rules and regulations in the Army and strict action was taken by the force against the erring officers. In all, 168 personnel from 226 Field Regiment, including the unit’s then commanding officer (CO) and four other officers were held blameworthy by a court of inquiry (COI)presided by Brig Ajay Talwar, Deputy General Officer Commanding 3 Infantry Division.
