Kerala political killings: BJP women MPs send rakhis to slain RSS worker's brother

Thiruvananthapuram: In a unique gesture of solidarity on Raksha Bandhan, seven BJP women MPs on Monday sent rakhis to the brother of an RSS worker killed near Thiruvananthapuram on 29 July.

"We want to say that you are not alone, we are your sisters from various parts of the nation...we share your grief, stand with you and your family," the women MPs said in a letter to Rajiv, younger brother of Rajesh.

Rajesh was hacked to death on 29 July at nearby Sreekaryam in Kerala.

"We are sending you a thread of rakhi as a mark of our love, support and respect for you and to say that we are praying to God for your protection and for the long life of everyone in your family," they said.

Riti Pathak, Sampatiya Uike, Anju Bala, Bharti Ben Shiyal, Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah, Roopa Ganguly and Pritam Munde are the members of parliament behind the initiative.

Referring to the attack on the RSS worker, they said it was violence against humanity and the Constitution, urging all women, cutting across party lines, to stand against it and act together.

"We stand with all victims of CPM violence in Kerala," the MPs said.

The BJP has maintained that CPM workers were behind the killing of Rajesh.

Union minister Arun Jaitley had visited the family of the RSS worker on 6 August and accused the ruling CPM of unleashing its cadres for "eliminating rivals and creating an environment of violence".

He had also said that incidents of violence increased every time the Left Democratic Front (LDF) was in power.

BJP-RSS and CPM cadres are locked in a bloody battle of attrition in the state, which has claimed several lives on both sides. There has been a spurt in such incidents in the recent past as the BJP seeks to expand its base in the state.

Both sides have traded charges against each other over the violence.
