Jharkhand temple stampede leaves 11 dead and 24 injured, rescue operations on
Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das expressed grief at the death of 11 persons in a stampede in Deogarh. He issued directions for better treatment of the injured.
A stampede at a Durga temple in Deogarh town in Jharkhand has left at least 11 dead early on Monday, police said. Police said that at least eight women died and another 24 were injured.
The incident occurred around 4 am while the devotees tried to overtake each other, according to Deogarh district Deputy Commissioner Amit Kumar.
According to the police, more than 100,000 people were in a queue, many waiting since Sunday night, to get into the famous Baidyanath Temple, when the stampede occurred.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das expressed grief for the dead persons. The chief minister also issued directions for better treatment of the injured, an official statement said here. Home Secretary N N Pandey, Additional Director General of Police S N Pradhan and other officials have been supervising the rescue operation and treatment of more than 30 persons, the statement said.
The chief minister has announced compensation of Rs two lakh to the kin of those killed in the incident. The injured would be given Rs 50,000, an official statement said.
Deograh is around 350 km from Ranchi.
The stampede took place on the second Monday of the auspicious Shrawan month when thousands of devotees visited Degoarh to offer prayers after fetching water from Bihar’s Sultanpur, about 108 from Deogarh.
Jharkhand Labour and Employment Minister Raj Paliwal reached Sadar hospital where the injured were being treated.
