The Indian government has taken several steps to prevent infiltration and secure its borders with Myanmar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.

In an interview with Assam Tribune, the Prime Minister said, “The Government of India has started construction of fencing and feasible patches along the Indo-Myanmar Border.”

4- Construction of fencing on feasible patches along the Indo-Myanmar Border.

On February 6, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the border between India and Myanmar would be fenced on the lines of the border with Bangladesh. The Centre also scrapped the Free Movement Regime (FMR).

However, the government in Mizoram does not want the fencing of the India-Myanmar border and on February 28, the state Assembly adopted a resolution against the Central government’s decision to fence the border with the neighbouring nation.

The resolution, moved by Mizoram Home Minister K Sapdanga, urged the government to instead take steps to ensure that Zo ethnic people, “who have been divided in different countries, are unified under one administrative unit”.

The Mizoram government said the fencing of the border or scrapping the FMR will mandate the approval of the imposed boundary which will be unacceptable for the Zo ethnic people.

Four Indian states — Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh — share a 1,643-km-long international border with Myanmar. Mizoram shares a 510-km-long border with Myanmar’s Chin state and the Mizos share ethnic ties with the Chin people.

“The Government of India has also been providing devices and necessary assistance to the state government to carry out a biometric capture plan,” the PM said.

The Prime Minister also said that the Central government has been bringing about policy changes to adjust to the changing realities on the ground.
