Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar along with his cabinet on Tuesday submitted their resignation ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

The development comes amid speculations that the BJP and Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) will part ways. Sources say Nayab Saini or Sanjay Bhatia are likely to replace him.

The oath-taking ceremony for the new chief minister will take place on Tuesday.

BJP leader Kanwar Pal Gujjar confirmed Khattar’s resignation and said, “CM and cabinet ministers have resigned and the Governor has accepted the resignations.”

Why has Khattar resigned?

Ties between BJP and Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala-led JJP started deteriorating after the two parties failed to reach a seat-sharing agreement ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

In 2019, the BJP had won all 10 Lok Sabha seats in the state elections.

Meanwhile, Independent MLA Nayan Pal Rawat acknowledged that the alliance between the two parties is at breaking point, and support of some independent MLAs for Khattar might ensure BJP’s survival in the state.

Earlier today, Union Minister Arjun Munda and former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb went to Haryana to oversee the changes in the government.

Sources say that Khattar is likely to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Karnal.

The number game

To form a government in Haryana, the BJP will need to count on the support of 46 lawmakers. Currently, in the 90-member Assembly, BJP has 41 MLAs, Congress 30 and JJP 10.

There are seven Independents. There is one MLA each from the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and the HLP.
