Govt plans cow project on lines of Project Tiger, plans sanctuaries in every state, says minister

As if banning of cow slaughter and the rise of the gau rakshaks were not enough to indicate that the BJP-led government is extremely serious about cows, Minister of State (Home Affairs) Hansraj G Ahir told The Indian Express that government is mulling a proposal to set up cow sanctuaries on the lines of Tiger Project.

Ahir expressed concerns over protection of cows and proposed that every state must have cow sanctuaries. "We need to stop cow slaughter, but the biggest stumbling block is who will take care of these cows… We need to make cow sanctuaries for this, and need to make arrangements for fodder also," he told The Indian Express

He further said that the proposal has been discussed with the Ministry of Environment and plans are on to expedite the proposal.

The Gujarat assembly on 31 March made its anti-cow slaughter law the toughest in the country with the offence now becoming non-bailable and punishable with a life-time in jail. Immediately after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath came to power, the Uttar Pradesh administration began crackdown on illegal slaughterhouses. A Muslim man was recently beaten to death by cow vigilantes in Rajasthan's Alwar district.

Khan and at least four others were injured when a mob attacked nearly 15 persons hailing from Haryana, while transporting cows in vehicles on the Behror highway. Reports suggested that Khan and the others were beaten up even after they produced valid documents.

According to Indiaspend, as of March 2017, cow slaughter has been prohibited in 84 percent of states and Union territories, which account for 99.38 per cent of the population.

Project Tiger was launched in 1973 by the Government of India to ensure conservation of the tigers. Does the minister suggest that cows require the protection and care on the scale usually reserved for endangered species?
