A 32-year-old woman succumbed to burn injuries after she allegedly attempted suicide by setting herself on fire in Ambi village in Osmanabad district. The mother of five reportedly took this extreme step because her family was allegedly starving due to the prevailing drought in the region.
Unemployed and unable to feed her five children anymore, Manisha Gatkal set herself on fire in Maharashtra's drought-hit Marathwada region, which chief minister Devendra Fadnavis toured extensively last week, reports NDTV.
Following the incident, Gatkal was admitted to Osmanabad district hospital, police said on Friday.
However, she was shifted to a hospital in Solapur in serious condition as she had suffered 80 per cent burns.
She died on Thursday, they said.
The victim's husband, a labourer, had been unable to secure any work in the region. The couple were unable to even have two square meals a day, police said.
A case of accidental death has been registered in this connection, police said, adding, the matter is being investigated.
