Chennai autorickshaw driver killed, 10 injured as drunk student drives Porsche onto curb

A 22-year-old drunk student rammed a Porsche into 12 parked auto-rickshaws in Chennai on early Monday morning killing an auto driver and injuring ten others.

According to NDTV, the incident took place at Cathedral Road at 3.30 am when the Vikas Vijayanand, who was driving under influence of alcohol, tore through the parked autos even as some of the drivers were sleeping in them.

Auto drivers Arumugam and VaradhanThe Hindustan Times report said, sustained serious injuries and were transferred to the Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital, while the rest were sent to the Royapettah Government Hospital.

Arumugam was killed on the spot while some others sustained injuries, police said.

Vijayanand has been arrested and the investigation is on. He was with a friend and both were returning from a party on Sunday night, stated the report.

According to The News Minute, Vikas Vijayanand was allegedly a professional racer and had won the premier title in the MRF Formula 1600 category. His father, Vijayanand, is a High Court lawyer and a member of the Madras Bar Association.

Earlier in July, a woman driver of a luxury car was arrested for allegedly fatally knocking down a carpenter on the busy Rajiv Gandhi Salai.
