Mumbai: A bus on its way to Goa from Mumbai fell off a bridge in Ratnagiri district in western Maharashtra, killing 37 people on the spot and leaving more than 20 injured. The incident took place on the Goa-Mumbai highway at 3.30 am on Tuesday morning.
According to CNN IBN, the injured have been shifted to several medical facilities nearby and the victims with severe injuries are being treated at the Khed Hospital.
The bus was reportedly travelling at a high speed and the accident took place when it tried to overtake a truck on the narrow bridge. The driver lost control, causing the bus to spin out of control, break the barricades and fall off the bridge into the dried up Jagpuri river.
Police fear that the casualty count might go up as they are still in the process of retrieving bodies from the remains of the bus. Also, several of the victims suffered serious head injuries and are battling for their lives in the hospitals.
