Bofors in the making: BJP on VVIP chopper deal scam

BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad slammed the UPA government on Wednesday over the VVIP chopper deal scam and asked why the government had not taken any action, when there was a probe being conducted into the case in Italy.

"The BJP had raised the chopper deal issue in Parliament, why was the government silent then?" Ravi Shankar Prasad asked the UPA government.

Criticising  the government, Prasad said that it was another Bofors-like case in the making.

He said that Defence Minister AK Antony made false statements about the VVIP chopper deal in Parliament.

Defence Minister AK Antony, however, had said earlier in the day that the government will not hesitate to blacklist companies and cancel defence contracts found tainted by the chopper scam. He reiterated that action can only be taken after the CBI completed an investigation into the incident.

Antony refused to comment on revelations that former Air force chief SP Tyagi had been involved in the scam. Ex-Airforce chief SP Tyagi has been formally named by Italian investigators as one of those to whom Finmeccanica, the parent company of AgustaWestland, paid bribes to swing the deal in favour of the company.
