The division bench of Chief Justice AM Khanwilkar and Justice Alok Aradhe issued the directive on Wednesday while hearing a petition filed by Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Udyog Sangthan, an NGO, and others.

The committee has pointed out in its quarterly reports there there was lack of medicines and shortfall of specialist doctors and equipment in the hospitals where medical aid is provided to the surviving victims of Union Carbide gas leak, one of the world's biggest industrial disasters which claimed at least 3,000 lives.

In August 2013, the Supreme Court had set up the monitoring committee. It is empowered to oversee functioning of the hospitals dealing with the victims, the petitioners' counsel Rajesh Chand said.
