Jodhpur: The Rajasthan High Court today directed the state government to take action over the allegations made by the CBI that its officials were being threatened and the witnesses pressurised to retract from their statements in the Bhanwari Devi murder case.

The division bench comprising Justices Govind Mathur and N K Jain-II directed the Rajasthan government to consider the applications of the CBI and take action by 2nd March.

"The government has to take action by March 2 and report to this effect is to be produced before the court on March 3," state's counsel Pradhyuman Singh told reporters here. He said a complaint of threat has already been given to the police by the CBI.

The court, during the hearing of the habeas corpus of Bhanwari Devi's husband Amarchand, also directed to consider the request of the CBI to shift former minister Mahipal Maderna and MLA Malkhan Singh Bishnoi, both of whom are key accused, to some other jail separately.

The court said the allegations made by the CBI were of serious nature and need to be looked into by the state government in order to ensure the objectivity of the probe.

The CBI counsel Panne Singh produced an affidavit today, which claimed that the agency has been facing obstacles as "the high and mighty accused" are involved in the case, who are exercising every possible trick to influence the witnesses, threaten the officials and scuttle the probe.

The agency said both the key accused belong to prominent communities and have been mobilising support to influence the witnesses and have filed frivolous petition in different courts to hamper the investigation.

"Consequently, four important witnesses have gone on hiding due to the pressure on them despite appearing before the CBI a couple of times for interrogation," a CBI official said, adding that Sahi Ram Bishnoi and Umesha Ram Bishnoi have already retracted their statements.

Meanwhile, the SC/ST court rejected the interim bail application of Malkhan Singh Bishnoi. He had moved an application in the ADJ court after the CBI court rejected the bail application, which shifted the matter to the SC/ST court.
