Assam Cong leader arrested for raping woman, villagers beat him up

A Congress leader from the Chirang district of Assam has been arrested for allegedly raping a woman.

Based on the FIR filed by the woman's husband against Congress leader Bikram Singh Brahma, the police in lower Assam's Chirang district today arrested Brahma, Chirang superintendent of police Kumar Sanjeev Krishna told PTI.

Brahma is the Congress coordinator of Bodoland Territorial Council and Baksa district Congress committee

When the people of Santipur area along the Indo-Bhutan border, where the incident happened, came to know of the incident, they gheraoed Brahma. Reports on television news channels showed him getting beaten up by angry villagers after he was caught.

An IBN-Live report says that the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Congress Committee chief convener Bikramsingh Brahma allegedly forced his way into the woman's house around 2 am and raped her.


The woman, who is a mother of two, cried out for help. It was then that the villagers caught hold of Brahma and assaulted him until the police arrived.
