    Sonowal directs Assam DGP to beef up security

    Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has directed Assam Director General of Police Mukesh Sahay to beef up security and launch a vigorous drive to apprehend those behind the "heinous crime", Sonowal said the militants would be dealt with "very sternly".

    The National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Songbijit) is one of the largest insurgent group active in the region with more than 300 cadres in its folds. According to The Times of India report published a few months before the deadly 2014 Assam attacks, NDFB(S) continues to be the most powerful faction of the militant groups active in the region.

    Police have so far recovered 13 bodies and search operations are continuing in the area as the militants are suspected to be hiding in nearby buildings, according to PTI.

    Our government is committed to protect the people of Assam, said Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. He has directed senior officials to rush to the spot. Ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh will be given to next of kin of people who died, Rs 1 lakhs for the injured, he said.

    NIA Guwahati team on its way to Kokrajhar

    Sources said police and army are on the trail of three terrorists who fled after throwing grenades. They said that total six terrorists were involved. Also, the NIA Guwahati team is on its way to Kokrajhar. Sonowal said that Himanta Biswa Sarma will also be visiting the spot.

    Sonowal condemns attack 

    Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal condemned the attack in Kokrajhar, Assam. He said that he has briefed the Prime Minister and Home Minister and assured strict action against those involved in the attack. He said that the terror organisation will be booked. Centre also rushed paramilitary forces to the spot.

    Death toll may go up: Police

    Police said a group of militants swooped down on Tiniali market on Friday afternoon and opened fire in the marketplace. The police have so far recovered two bodies and it is feared that the toll may increase. The injured, many of them critical, are being shifted to nearby hospitals.

    According to Assam Times, security forces recently arrested four cadres of the National Democratic Front of Boroland-Songbijit faction (NDFB-S) in Kokrajhar. Firearms were also recovered from them.

    Militants came in an auto

    The militants came in an auto and opened fire in the busy Kokrajhar market area. A large number of people had gathered at the weekly market. Kokrajhar is the capital town of Bodoland. The NIA Guwahati is likely to send a team soon. Combing operations are now underway. This is the first major terror attack since the BJP came to power in Assam.

    Army sources said that 13 civilians and 1 terrorist killed in the attack. Around 18 civilians were injured. AK-47 rifles were recovered and the gunmen were dressed in army fatigues.

    Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju condemned the attack and said that the peace had returned in Bodoland after a long time and this incident is unfortunate. "We will ensure that the victims are taken care of and we will find out who is behind the attack. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the situation.

    One militant killed in encounter with security personnel in Assam

At least 14 people have died in an encounter between militants and security forces in Kokrajhar in Assam, CNN-News18 reported. According to the reports, at least 10 civilians were those among killed.

At around 11.30 am, shootout broke out in a busy market area in Kokrajhar Assam. So far no group has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The Assam DGP told CNN-News18 that three to four militants were still on the run, and the area has been cordoned off. The search is still on even as one terrorist has been shot dead. A fierce gunbattle is underway in Barzan bazaar.
