The death of an 11-year-old student in a north Kolkata school, reportedly because of the mental trauma she suffered after being harassed by her seniors, saw hundreds of people protesting at the school. CNN-IBN reported that the protesters consisted of parents of students who ransacked the school in Dum Dum. The police had to use batons to disperse the angry protesters who destroyed a lot of school property during the rampage. Ibnlive[/caption] Class V student Aindrila Das was allegedly “heckled and tortured” by some Class 8 students of the school for not paying them Rs 100 that they wanted. The parents of the girl demanded the immediate identification of the senior students who allegedly bullied her last week and locked her up inside a toilet, reported CNN-IBN. An attendant of the school found the student crying inside the toilet and took her home. Claiming that similar incidents have happened with other junior girls of the Christ Church Girls’ School, the parents and guardians accused the principal of inaction, despite full knowledge of the incidents. “The principal is responsible for her death. She should be arrested,” one of the parents said, as others laid siege to the school premises. _NDTV_ reported the girl’s mother Rekha Das as saying, “She was traumatised in school. Thats why she fell ill. There is also medical negligence. The doctors didn’t treat her properly." The parents alleged that the girl became so traumatised that she had to be admitted to a nursing home where she died today unable to get over the shock. Aindrila’s parents also rubbished school authorities’ claims that the girl had not complained to them of her trauma. “We will take action against the girls who locked her up,” NDTV quoted Sharmila Sarkar, the principal of the school as saying. After Aindrila’s parents registered a police complaint against the school’s authorities, a team arrived at the school to question the authorities. As irate parents had already laid a siege outside the school, policemen found themselves unable to meet the principal. “I have lost my daughter. But at least her death has created awareness which will help save many little girls from the menace of ragging,” the victim’s father Santanu Das said. With agency inputs
