After Bengaluru, goons molest girl on Delhi streets, attack cops who tried to save her
Delhi Police has not yet registered a molestation case as the woman who was molested has not yet come forward to register a complaint.
Days after the shocking Bengaluru molestation case on the New Year's Eve, another similar incident has been reported from Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar that has once again raised questions on women's safety in the national capital.
The New Year Eve's revelry was disrupted when a group of drunk goons tried to molest a girl on the streets of north-west Delhi and the policemen who tried to intervene were also attacked by the gang of men.
According to CNN-News 18, a girl was riding pillion on a bike when a group of drunk men celebrating at the chowk near Batra Cinemas tried to grope the girl. The TV channel also reported that four to five policemen, including women police constables were injured in the stone pelting that ensued thereafter.
A policeman present at the time recounted the incident for CNN-News 18. According to him, at about 11:15 pm on 31 December, a bike with two people, including a woman, was passing through an area where a group of 200 to 250 college students were partying on the streets. A group of drunk men from the crowd tried to pull the woman from behind and grope her. When a group of cops standing at a distance noticed the incident they rushed to the spot to save the woman, who was able to flee the spot on account of the police intervention.
However, the agitated group later called up more boys and turned on the cops posted in the area. The mob, reportedly pelted stones on the police gypsy, and followed them to the nearby police station.
Meanwhile, public apathy towards such incidents was at display again as scores of onlookers witnessed the entire incident but nobody came forward to help the woman while the cops reached the spot. The incident is also reflective of the brazenness of the goons, who did not shy away from attacking even the cops, let alone harassing the victim.
The police has registered a case against unknown persons for attacking police officers and vandalising public property. However, a molestation case has not yet been filed as the woman has not come forward to register a complaint, arguably out of fear as the goons in questions were a larger pack and reportedly are residents of the same area.
The Delhi police, can however, take suo motu cognisance of the case and register a complaint of molestation.
The police, so far has not been able to identify the woman or the perpetrators but it has taken the CCTV footage and is investigating the matter.
