On the other hand, India subsidizes Rs. 72,000 crore every year (approx.) on petroleum products. It seems that scamming would grow but the leaders won’t bother to grow a brain to save price hike. Crooks can get exemptions, but you can’t get price support. Going to have ago @chefviveksingh cheesecake A nouveau Indian spread: fusion has never tasted better On articles: Balaji kartha Calcutta (I still like the old name), indeed Bengal itself, has been saved by the skin of its teeth. This state (and city) has been slowly dyeing for a 100 years - it was like an old actress living in the memory of her past. She looked grotesque with her makeup on that wrinkled face. Now she has been born again. Nows lets see what she grows up into. Posted on Minimum city blues: whither Kolkata? shiningpath The changing dynamics all around will obviously mean realignment and recalibration of cross-border political/diplomatic/strategic alliances. The tentative efforts towards identifying common grounds between India and the Taliban by both parties, is refreshing - and fraught with danger. Given the loose association that the taliban has with al qaeda, isi and godaloneknowswhom, this may well be a turning point in the geopolitical situation in this region. On the other hand, it is important to realise, that the taliban ideology was limited to establishing a sharia based administratrive/political/judicial system in Af - which was distinct from the stated aim of al qaeda (global caliphate). In fact, if experts like Atwan, Gunaratna, Gretchen Peters are to be believed, Taliban came close to striking a deal to sell OBL down the drain to the US-Nato alliance about 10 years ago! That speaks volumes about their limited ambitions - which offers the hint of a reflection of a shadow of a silver lining on the rather dark and indecipherable clouds on the horizon…. One cant ignore another factor - the issue of an exclusively Pak-friendly-Af providing the former “strategic depth”….and it is not in India’s intererst to leave that option open to Pak, given our strained relations with neighbours on other borders. We need some geopolitical play in this region, for our own stability - and with the economic engine of growth chugging along nicely, instability in our immediate neighbourhood is the last thing we need. Unless we are happy with falling back to the Hindu growth rate levels of the 80’s and 90’s… Lets see how this pans out. To use the oft-abused cliche - the road to hell is paved with good intentions… Posted on Look who is falling in love—India and Taliban Lala It’s been our weakness. I have been seeing the price of Petrol from around 7 as a kid and now at 70. People shout for few days, start speaking about saving through using using bicycle, public transport (in fact, they increase the ticket price by equal %) and in a few weeks we have witness car and bike co’s sales statement increases compared to prevous months. Just can’t understand the public mentality. Posted on Petrol prices have been hiked, so what? Tamil Today we the Karnataka people are ashamed because of BJP. All the surveys are saying that that Karnataka is the most corrupt state in India. how we became corrupt? By voting and electing BJP, Right? still should we support BJP? The people of bihar became intelligent and they elected a very good party and we are people of Karnataka still supporting to corrupt BJP party? It clearly reflecting that we are becoming like bihari people and biharis are upgraded their life and way of thinking like Karnataka people. Think and be ashamed to be a corrupt state’s citizen…!!! Now congress leaders in Karnataka is almost dead or in coma. few leaders are there like vishwanath, moily DKshi, etc very jealousy leaders. they don’t want siddaramaiah becoming chief minister f Karnataka. so playing dirty games behind congress party. some other leaders are looks like congress but they are pure RSS inside their heart. Note: if the secular parties in Karnataka JDS+PFI+CPI+CPIM & CONGRESS not become one front then they will be wiped out from Karnataka in next election. so, be careful….otherwise BJP will finish you. BJP is much talented in Dirty politics, dirty game and dirty corruption because Sri Ram is with them to bless all their bad deeds. Posted on SC verdict makes Karnataka CM Yeddy sweat, Oppn smiles Ags Narain Only one question comes to my mind as a lay man. What is the administrative system of India doing????? A news agency took pains to access so much of information and expose to the world. Is politics service to people or is another business model ?????? Posted on Jagan Reddy, India’s richest politician, lied to EC on assets Cmclvr Kuppur The 16 MLA’s are just opportunistic turn coats worst than ordinary criminals. They were determined to bring down BSY Govt. till they were improperly disqualified. They exhibited the same venomous rhetoric trading insults against BSY throughout their legal fight. When the Supreme Court gave them fresh lease of life, suddenly their loyalty is being purchased again indicates the abuse of money and power of BSY Govt. Had they were not disqualified, BSY Govt. would have fallen. It won trust vote by illegally disqualifying 16 MLA’s. When it is ruled as illegal means BSY Govt. lost its majority by virtue of the judgment minority and deserves to be dismissed on this count. The governor need not take cognizance of the immoral behaviour of turncoat MLA’s now as it is not relevant to the vote of confidence when these MLA’s were disqualified. There must be a follow up action consequent to the Apex Court Judgment. The President has the obligation to ensure that Democracy is not a child’s play. The corrupt BSY Govt. must be dismissed without dissolving the Assembly. It will not be unfair if another chance is given to BJP at a later time if it dumps this corrupt man and comes up with another leader. Had this job is done by BJP long ago. It would not have been in this ridiculous position in the first place. There’s a high likelihood that Mamata Banerjee, for all purposes, may turn out to be more ‘Communist’ than the communists. (I am hoping I am proved wrong on this one) 2. Managing such a high-profile team will require tremendous administrative skills. The article, while nice, is at heart, essentially a list of extraordinary talent. Who will bring this talent together and make it work? At present, I do not see any such person/group in WB politics. Posted on Didi’s great Bong dream team

Am from Mumbai, but the only city other than Mumbai I connect in India is Kolkatta. I’ve been there a few times and there is this Magical charm about the city that attracts, the other being New York. I don’t know what is about Kolkatta that magnetizes. I do agree that all the young guns are moving away and it’s sad. We in Mumbai do not even think about moving away from our City. The decay (am being cynical or what) rests with the Politicians. All of them Bengalis but do they care….I wonder when they are in their twilight of their Life sitting at home what will they be thinking of….only that they had cared about their City & State as much as they cared about their being in Power. These guys have made a sacrificial Lamb of Kolkatta or should i say West Bengal. We must now wait n watch if the Iron Lady can do something about this…will it happen during our lifetime, i Seriously hope so…….coz it really saddens to see the once Maximum City in total shambles.
Posted on Minimum city blues: whither Kolkata? Simon This may sound callous, but it’s time the government of India and the international donor agencies tweaked their strategy on AIDS which is gobbling up healthcare money. There are far more pressing issues, esp cardiovascular, diabetes, and cancer to pay attention to than just park all funds in the AIDS pool. After all in case of AIDS people know it’s largely due to deviant behaviour, that’s not so with cancer or heart diseases. These disorders need a similar dogged approach as HIV/AIDS got about 15 years ago. Posted on Breakthrough in AIDS battle: How relevant for India? Posted on Dhoni, Sachin, Zak rested for T20, ODI series against WI A . S. Nair Your example Vibhishana story from Ramayana do not fit in place. Vibhishana was an ardent devotee of Rama. In this case we do not see any love from Taliban towards India. Except that they may have an ‘inclination’ with the turban of MMS due to similarity. ;) The truth is that if US gets out Afgahanistan also wants to get out. US wants to split the taliban into Pak-T and Afg-T so that pak-T can be left in Pak to be destroyed by Pak and Afg-T ‘regularised’ and awarded. So that they can pullout fast. Whatever is the idea they all read one book ( and only that) - follow one path. They do not restrict their activities on any border. We should n’t extend a friendly hand unless they have reformed and apologized. How can that happen ? Taliban means religious student. Good Students normally graduate and will not drop out. Can US or India ask them to drop out ? We need to critically analyse the issue well before hugging a devil. More than the Khandahar hijacking the destruction of Bamiyan Budhas is vivid in my mind.
