The Prime Minister’s assertion that there was “no alternative” to the police crackdown on Baba Ramdev’s sleeping supporters on Sunday predictably garnered the most reaction on Firstpost today. Besides corruption, Baba Ramdev and Anna Hazare which have been dominating reader attention over the last few weeks, we also saw great interest in our book review of “The red market” which talked about India’s booming underground trade in human organs. As always, thank you for your comments and opinion. This is our pick of todays reader comments across our site and social media platforms:

Terrence Wharton More glorious uncertainties will be the order of the day. More political histrionics, more people in the public domain getting afflicted with “foot in the mouth” disease after they’ve made out of turn comments that have caused embarassment to the political party to which they are affiliated, more mud-slinging and slander-mongering, more hate posts being put up on Facebook, more sound and fury signifying nothing. The end of exciting times is not in sight. None of the protagonists will voluntarily withdraw or make an exit from the cauldron of chaos. Boy! Won’t today be another fun day! It is a pity most of us Indians still have to eke out a living and can’t be more involved in this collective exercise in futility.8 hours ago · Like

On our articles:

Girish Varma Finally the government finds some assertiveness. If this was made clear from the beginning, all the troubles wouldn’t have happened. We need a more powerful as well as humane government. The government shouldn’t have let a party which doesn’t have enough strength(in parliament) or other so called civil society members to hold it at ransom. At the same time it should have left them free to protest in ways that doesn’t affect public life.

It is just a perception that the so called civil society or the babas have popular support with the people. The only rational way to gauge support of people is through elections. And if these people want to change things they must face elections rather than taking shortcuts like hunger strikes. Satyagraha was needed in times of gandhi when there was no democracy. But today the people of the country have control over their destiny. They can choose their leaders. The problem of corruption exists because they choose the wrong ones. We need people to make their choices in a more wise manner. For this to happen there need to be more transperancy. The media is already doing a better job today.

Civil society people should understand that they have been given undue importance at first place. They are in no way elected representatives. They can bring their proposal but cannot blackmail/force/dictate terms to an elected government. This is democracy and If you have sincere intent, ensure a good anti corruption law/any other law is passed by working in tandem with them but instead you cannot keep criticising at every juncture the same government who is giving you this opportunity in due process and worst you ask the PM to resign and conduct new elections in few months for prevailing on a man on a mission. unfortunately i think this is done at the behest of a frustrated opposition and the sincere intent of few honest civil society is hijacked for personal/politicial gains. so with this my conclusion is this civil society representatives are not true representatives who are not working to ensure something good should happen to us instead working with a vendetta to project the government in bad light. So what we need to understand is that it is the government which is directly/indirectly doing things and they should be given due credit or else such things will happen.i think sane people with some sense will understand my views in broad perspective instead jumping to criticize me/government.

Arundhati Roy was tried in the Supreme court.. For using her freedom of Speech.. She has won a noble peace prize for what she has gone through to bring freedom of speech to this hindu/muslim religious crap shit of a country.. Her actions are the reason why so many activists can use dissent against their own government.. I believe you should leave all this “patriotic” “nationalistic” nonsense and do some research… There was a reason why they shouted those things.. and if you don’t understand that than good for you.. Cause Ignorance is bliss..

Tamix All people in India want is a life of dignity first. From birth to death, a simple life of dignity. No iphone, no BMW, no post malls..first ensure a life of dignity just like in scandanavian and european countries. A safety net that ensures this. Then you can have capitalism on top of that. You won’t have this madness to make money at all costs if you have the social safety net. Even social security in the US is designed to do this. All problems in India are arising from scams to hartals to illegal mining of ore or organs ie because people are in a mad rush to make money and avoid the bottom of the pile!. Can the govt atleast do this before talking about global ambitions and India as a world power? How would it look on world stage india dominitating world institutions while 800mn people are living off worse than in Africa? Is that the future India and Indians want?

I feel this article is based on a completely misunderstood view of what a ‘rivalry’ means. If numbers is what rivalry is all about then sure yea, this is no rivalry. But that is a very myopic view of looking at what a rivalry entails. Has any of these matches between Nadal and Federer been one sided? All of these matches are hard fought, Nadal considers Federer the toughest opponent to beat and none of them is boring!! You would think Federer is past his prime, but still he put in his best performance against Nadal in this finals. How is that not rivalry? This article does not look at the environment under which they are playing and only looks at numbers … of course you would reach that conclusion!

Lalit Well, No doubt that Anna Hazare had taken initiative to start the Lokpal bill movement initially with support of Baba Ramdev but later it appeared as if Baba Ramdev somewhere down the line thought as he might have lost an opportunity to take credit of campaign which he also was part of then he perhaps decided to go with the Seperate Curruption, Black Money protest all alone. Sometimes it feels that there is something in Baba Ramdev’s mind which is not clear to us. If All of these Civil society members are really fighting for the country then they should come and fight together to get all the demands fullfilled else I doubt Govt. will fullfill their promises and keeping finding the loops and poles and distances between different groups and use them to postpone and stretrch it further in the direction where nothing would be done!!! After Baba Ramdev incident one thing is clear that this govt. is very cunning and purely political which has nothing to do with People and their problems!!!

Arundhati Roy is a gifted writer who can inter-weave rhetoric and facts. Her polemical writings sometimes border on the extreme but they do give some food-for-thought on our country’s inner demons. But sadly, she seems to have slipped into a sort of permanent hallucination. All that she thinks of and writes of only portrays the real and imagined negativity around her. Everything seems to her a David vs Goliath contest where the Goliath is the merciless, rapacious Indian state which can do anything to keep the Davids under its thumb. We do want her to write what she writes but she has to keep herself immersed in the real reality, not the one which takes shape in her mind.

The saying goes like this - torture data long enough and it will confess to what ever you want. So, I guess we need to relish this competition between Roger and Rafa and probably, we need to include Nole. Put all your numbers out of this equation and see how mens tennis is quite well placed. Take a look at where we’re with women’s tennis. The current world number one hasn’t won any grand slam, yet and there aren’t any great rivalries to talk about.

The tone and tenor of Mr. Kapil Sibal is totally unparliamentary. He does not deserve to be a Central Minister who has habit of poking in affairs which are not in his domain. He is personally responsible for the Ramdev fiasco. He should know that People of India will never accept Lokpal Bill drafted by his Govt. as the bill would be totally ineffective and toothless. Let there be public debate over suggestions made by the Anna Hazre and his team who are more revered by people than the present government. Writing is on the wall. The Prime Minister should intervene and ensure that Mr. Kapil Sibal who behaves like a Don is restrained and fall in line as other members of the Drafting Committee. If Govt. had the sincerity and commitment to the people, it would not waited for the Anna to resort to Satyagrah.

Yes, it is high time all the activists took up this utterly tragic issue. Or is it not sexy enough? There are some Hindi films that highlight this issue but the mainstream media treats it as business as usual.

Doesntmatter

This is the real state of the country. Is there any government, local or central to look after these people? Will anybody go on fast for these people who are living in such a devastating condition that they have to sell their organs.

Any political party to cash on this story to get political mileage?

A glittering box, hollow and dirty inside. O’God, until and unless there’s somebody who develops social sense in-here, nothing is going to work. No Anna, Gandhi or Baba can make any change in the life of these people.

May god bless them.

What ALTERNATIVE is the PM talking about ?. Alternative to what ?…that they feared anarchy on the streets of Delhi ?. That there would be violence and rioting ?. That there was real threat to life and property ?. In fact, let the PM tell us what he feared would have happened if the event was allowed to continue. If there are no valid reasons then there is a big question mark on who owns this Ramlila grounds. The public or the Congress netas ?

Let the deal between Ramdeve and Congress happen in public. Everybody has a right to know whats going on. Lets us also know what congress was trying to settle with Ramdev. That way every body will come to know who is the betrayer and who is not. We also want to see to which demands Ramdev retraced and called a betrayer. Secret meetings trying to reach something always is suspicious in its intent and means.
