The recent f8 conference that took place on 22 September made it obvious that neither Mark Zuckerberg nor his team of super geeks were taking the constantly changing world of the cyberspace for granted. With the fervent debate raging over the addition of the ‘Subscriber’ and the ‘Timeline’ features to personal profiles, I decided to test the effectiveness of this playful new tool on Mark Zuckerberg. ‘Subscriber’ allows you to follow the newsfeed of a person without actually befriending them on Facebook. As of today Mark has 5,793,703 subscribers, a number that is growing exponentially by the hour. For someone obsessed with Mark, the feature allows me to become his subscriber/public page stalker, offering me a closer look at his life. Here then is what I found about the greatest thinker of this millennium by just accessing his public profile. He likes to cook: Zuckerberg’s known to have his quirks when it comes to food. He believes in killing an animal himself before devouring it. While that’s hardly endearing, his wall photos of botched attempts at making three hearts out of chicken, cheese, and shrimps tell another love story. Mark clearly likes his food to look pretty and imaginative. And the painstaking effort to put together two shrimps to make a heart says a lot about a man going the extra mile to show his love. And his interest in cooking is surely good news for the future Mrs Zuckerberg. Mark explains in the comment column how each kid was only allowed to take one candy. Sounds a bit miserly or maybe he’s just practising to be a good dad. He can be a conformist: The hoodie-loving Facebook founder is often trashed or admired for his not so fashionable love for laidback. Before seeing Mark’s picture with President Obama, dated 18 February in a suit I, often imagined him as the non-conforming hero of Ayn Rand’s Fountainhead, Howard Roark. I wasn’t impressed by the sight of him in a suit though formal wear is required on such occasions. But I still unlike. He loves his dog: Beast, Zuckerberg’s Hungarian Sheepdog has his own page on Facebook! A whopping 227,421 people like the page. Beast belongs to Mark and Priscilla Chan, who is Mark’s girlfriend. Born January 2011, the not-so-beastly looking Beast with his shaggy mop of hair posts regular updates on Facebook, and calls Mark, Dad, and Priscilla, Mom. And a pretty cool dad he is. Mark often sits with Beast on the computer educating him about current events, cleans up after him, grooms him, takes him to the farm, let’s him stick his head out of the car window. Mark also takes nepotism to the next level: he’s made Beast an engineer at Facebook. He likes answering questions: Scroll down his public Subscriber’s page and you’ll know what I am talking about. He answers questions like: Which way do you put your phone in your pocket? Mark answers: Top pointing down; What was your first car? Mark: Subaru Forester; What’s your favourite colour? Mark: Blue; His favourite sport? Mark: Fencing. Other Facebook revelations: Mark is a big Andy Samberg (American actor, comedian, rapper, writer) fan. He was on Mumbai on 28 December 2009; had even secured a white linel suit for a Goa wedding, and wore a maroon sherwani while attending the marriage of two of his employees. He likes Lady Gaga Green Day, U2, Katy Perry, and Nicholas Sarkozy in no particular order of preference. Intrusive much? The feature is clearly a boon for profile stalkers. If I got such scoop by just subscribing to Mark Zuckerberg, imagine what Timeline has in store for me and you!
So what did Pratishtha Dobhal learn about her favourite geek when she signed up as his subscriber? For starters, the man is a sappy romantic who loves kids.
