Fasting with migraine: Can you observe Ramzan without triggering headaches?
Ramzan is a holy month for the Muslim community. Reuters

Muslims throughout Ramzan participate in spiritual fasting however this practice proves difficult for migraine patients because dehydration combined with blood sugar drops and withdrawal from caffeine and interrupted sleep cycles. Strategical planning enables you to practice Ramzaan fasting despite preventing possible headaches.

During Ramzan observe spiritual fasting but this practice becomes challenging for migraine patients as dehydration along with lowering of blood sugar levels and withdrawal from caffeine and disturbed sleep patterns. Strategical planning allows you to perform Ramzan fasting while preventing potential headaches.

A number of strategies help prevent headaches during fasting periods.

Between Suhoor and Iftar drink a lot of water to ensure proper hydration. Eating hydrating foods like cucumbers yogurt and watermelon will have a positive effect on your body. Stay away from foods with salt and fried foods because they cause body dehydration.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

You should consume a balanced Suhoor consisting of complex carbohydrates (brown rice and oats) along with proteins (lentils and eggs and dairy) and good fats (avocado and nuts) for blood sugar balance. Such food results in blood sugar swings which have to be avoided while fasting.

The change from caffeine intake during Ramzan must occur gradually to avoid caffeine withdrawal side effects. Green tea and other herbal beverages are good substitutes for coffee throughout the day.

Migraine symptoms often start when individuals have problems sleeping. Establish a consistent routine for sleeping and take short resting periods as needed to avoid drowsiness.

Individuals should start their Iftar dinner with water and dates so that they do not lose blood sugar balance. You must prefer to have dates and water during iftar and strictly avoid processed foods, artificial sweeteners, MSG and all fried and excessively salty foods.

Monitor your level of stress as you practice deep breathing along with reducing your effort level.

Before altering your medication time schedule, discuss appropriate adjustments for fasting periods with your doctor.

When to seek medical advice

Visit a medical professional to identify the cause of intense migraines that occur during every fast. The Islamic religion offers medical exemptions to individuals whose health status would worsen due to fasting.

Correct planning helps you fast through Ramzan without worsening of migraine symptoms. Everyone should be in peace and good health throughout this month to come.
