Over 100 people at Cuttack cancer hospital test positive in 10 days; probe ordered

An investigation was ordered on Sunday after around 100 patients, attendants and healthcare workers at a cancer hospital in Odisha’s Cuttack tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 10 days, officials said.The Acharya Harihar Regional Cancer Research Centre has been sealed for sanitisation after the cases were reported, they said. Cuttack District Collector Bhabani Shankar Chaini told reporters that the matter was being investigated, and appropriate action will be taken if any lapses were found. Cancer patients who were getting treated at the hospital alleged negligence on the part of the authorities as the reason behind such an outbreak at the facility.

The Mau district administration has decided to impose a 15-day lockdown in the urban areas, beginning Monday, to stop COVID-19 from spreading, a senior official said. “People were seen moving in hotspot areas in the district without wearing masks and gloves. As a result of this, COVID-19 was spreading in the district,” District Magistrate Gyan Prakash Tripathi said. “Keeping this in view, it was decided to impose the lockdown, so that the district can be saved from the spread of COVID-19 infection,” he said.

As many as 108 personnel from three Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) of the BSF, the ITBP and the CRPF tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday, officials said. The Border Security Force, the about 2.5-lakh personnel strong force, reported 36 fresh cases and 33 recoveries over the last 24 hours, officials said quoting the latest data.  The Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), tasked to guard the 3,488-km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, reported 18 new infections while one personnel recovered in the last 24 hours, the officials said.  A total of 54 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel also tested positive for coronavirus on Sunday, while nine personnel were discharged after recovery, the officials said.

The Rajasthan government has decided to cancel all examinations of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in universities, colleges and technical educational institutions in the state in view of the COVID-19 pandemic, officials said on Sunday. The decision was taken at a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Saturday night. Students will be promoted to the next class without any examination, they said. A decision on determination of the students’ marks will be taken after a study of the guidelines to be issued by the Union HRD Ministry in the next few days, Technical Education Minister Subhash Garg said.

At least seven more people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Arunachal Pradesh, raising the total in the state to 259, a senior health department official said on Sunday. All fresh cases were reported from isolation centres, where people are being placed under quarantine following their return from other states, Surveillance Officer L Jampa said. The United States has the most infections and virus-related deaths in the world, with 2.8 million cases and nearly 1,30,000 dead, according to the university.

Kansas newspaper’s post equates mask mandate with Holocaust

A weekly Kansas newspaper whose publisher is a county Republican Party chairman posted a cartoon on its Facebook page likening the Democratic governor’s order requiring people to wear masks in public to the roundup and murder of millions of Jews during the Holocaust.

The cartoon on the Anderson County Review’s Facebook page depicts Gov. Laura Kelly wearing a mask with a Jewish Star of David on it, next to a drawing of people being loaded onto train cars. Its caption is, “Lockdown Laura says: Put on your mask … and step onto the cattle car.”

The newspaper posted the cartoon on Friday, the day that Kelly’s mask order aimed at stemming the spread of the coronavirus took effect.

Florida, Texas post daily COVID-19 records as ‘positivity’ rates climb

Florida and Texas, two states that have emerged as the latest hot spots of the US coronavirus outbreak, both reported record daily increases in confirmed COVID-19 cases on Saturday – with nearly 20,000 additional infections combined.

For a sixth straight day, Texas registered an all-time high in the number of people hospitalised with the highly contagious respiratory illness – 7,890 patients after 238 new admissions over the past 24 hours.

By comparison, New York state – the US epicenter of the outbreak months ago, reported just 844 hospitalisations on Saturday, far below the nearly 19,000 hospital beds occupied by COVID-19 patients at the peak of its coronavirus crisis.

WHO discontinues its trials of anti-malaria drug HCQ

The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Saturday that it was discontinuing its trials of the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine and combination HIV drug lopinavir/ritonavir in hospitalised patients with COVID-19 after they failed to reduce mortality, reports Reuters

“These interim trial results show that hydroxychloroquine and lopinavir/ritonavir produce little or no reduction in the mortality of hospitalised COVID-19 patients when compared to standard of care. Solidarity trial investigators will interrupt the trials with immediate effect,” the WHO said in a statement, referring to large multicountry trials that the agency is leading.
