The Delhi government late on Sunday released a list of residence proofs on the basis on which hospitals can grant admission to patients. According to the list, voter cards, Aadhar cards, electricity bills and a few other documents can be furnished as proof. The government had earlier in the day restricted admission to hospitals in the National Capital only to residents in view of the rising coronavirus cases and increasing burden of health infrastructure.

The authorities on Sunday began scaling down of Nizamuddin Basti containment zone that was set up after several cases of COVID-19 were reported from there in wake of the gathering at Tablighi Jamat headquarters in the area in March. The area was under containment for the last 70 days after south east district administration declared it a containment zone on March 30 to prevent the further spread of the COVID-19 virus.An order issued by south east district magistrate Harleen Kaur on Sunday said health authorities have recommended scaling down of Nizamuddin Basti since no new COVID-19 case was detected in the last 28 days.

Most religious places to open in Madhya Pradesh

Places of worship outside containment zones in several places in Madhya Pradesh will reopen from Monday, when several restrictions for the coronavirus-induced lockdown are set to be eased, though no decision has been taken for red zones Indore and Bhopal. The state government had issued the standard operating procedure (SOP) for religious places on 5 June.

According to an official, the doors of Ujjain’s famous Mahakaleshwar Temple, one of the 12 ‘jyotirlingas’ which attracts several lakh devotees every year, would open from 8 am on Monday, though another ‘jyortilinga’ at Omkareshwar in Khandwa district, will follow the suit on 16 June.

Toll in Thane climbs to 366

The number of COVID-19 cases in Thane district reached 11,359 after 447 people tested positive for novel coronavirus on Sunday, while the death toll touched366 as 14 people died of the infection, an official said.Among those who tested positive on Sunday are half a dozen children from Navi Mumbai, including a five-month-old girl, he added. Mira Bhayander municipal limits accounted for 83 of the 447 cases, the official said.

Seventy five more people from 16 districts tested positive for the virus during the last 24 hours, pushing the tally in the state to 2,856, of which 951 are active cases, while the toll mounted to nine.

Haryana reports four deaths, highest single-day jump of 496 cases

 Haryana on Sunday reported four COVID-19 deaths — three of them from worst-hit Faridabad district — as the state recorded its highest single-day jump in cases at 496, of which 230 were from Gurgaon alone. With three more deaths, Faridabad district has reported a total of 13 COVID fatalities. One death was reported from Panipat, taking the total number of fatalities in the district to four, according to the state health department’s evening bulletin.   Haryana now has a total of 28 coronavirus deaths.  With fresh infections, cumulative cases in the state rose to 4,448. Worst-hit Gurgaon district’s cumulative coronavirus cases on Sunday evening stood at 1,922, of which 1,467 were active ones.

Places of worship, hotels in Nagaland to remain shut

Nagaland, which has witnessed a recent spurt in COVID-19 cases, has decided to keep places of worship and hotels in the Christian-majority state closed till further orders, a senior official said on Sunday.Lockdown measures issued by the chief secretary of Nagaland on May 4 will remain in place till further orders, Principal Secretary (Home) Abhijit Sinha told reporters.

“All places of worship shall be closed for public. Religious congregations are strictly prohibited,” the notification issued by the chief secretary on May 4 said. The notification was issued to extend lockdown in the state. As per the notification, all hospitality services, barring those dealing with police personnel, government officials, healthcare workers and stranded persons, shall remain closed.

BEST to operate 250 more buses from 8 June in Mumbai

The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) will start operating 250 more buses in Mumbai in addition to 1,800 from Monday, an official said on Sunday. Now, employees of government, private sectors as well as those who are self-employed can also travel in these buses, he said. 

BEST PRO Manoj Varade said the frequency of buses will be increased if demand rises in the coming days. “As of now, we are running buses on 81 routes. We will add more buses from Monday. Only 30 people — 25 sitting and five standing–will be allowed to travel in a bus with proper social distancing,” he said.

New hotspot in Kanpur as sixty people test positive in a lane

Sixty people have tested positive for coronavirus in a single 200-metre lane in Kanpur with authorities saying that a corporator staying there was the first one to catch the infection.Chief Medical Officer Dr Ashok Shukla said, “In a bylane of Vidyut Colony located in Barra Police Station area, 60 people have tested COVID-19 positive since Thursday. Most of them have not shown any signs of the infection.” According to Shukla, the local corporator had fallen ill following his return from Gorakhpur and along with his representative had tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday. “People who came in contact with the corporator and his representative were traced and in a span of four days, 60 locals were found to be COVID-19 positive. Of them, 20 are women,” he said. They have been admitted to Rama Medical College and the area has been declared as a hotspot, he said.

The central government also said it is “fine-tuning” its strategy based on emerging knowledge and experience on the ground. “This virus is a new agent, not everything is known about it as yet. Government is fine-tuning the strategy based on emerging knowledge and experience on the ground,” the health ministry’s statement said. “As is well known in public health, different stages of epidemic demand different responses, and the nuanced, step-wise response is known to be a positive characteristic of a resilient health system,” it said.

Centre defends lockdown decisions

Asserting that coronavirus is a “new agent” about which not everything is known, the government on Sunday defended the timing of imposition of the lockdown and rejected as “baseless” media reports expressing concerns that it did not take inputs from technical experts while drawing up its COVID-19 strategy. The government also said it is “fine-tuning” its strategy based on emerging knowledge and experience on the ground. 

“The doubling rate of cases had dropped to a low level, pointing toward a dangerous trajectory of high case load and high mortality, as experienced by many western countries. The possibility that our health systems could soon be overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients seemed to be real,” the health ministry said ina statement, adding that there was all round consensus on the lockdown among all state governments.

Restaurants in Goa allowed to reopen from tomorrow

Restaurants in Goa will be allowed to reopen from Monday, although the ban on operations of other establishments like schools, colleges, cinema halls, gyms, will continue as earlier, an official said on Sunday.

In its fresh set of guidelines regarding the lockdown issued on Sunday, the state government also gave relaxation of two hours for movement of individuals for non-essential activities, the official said.

While the current ban on such movement is between 7 pm and 5 am, from Monday onwards, it would be restricted to 9 pm and 5 am.

The collectors of both the districts- South Goa and North Goa- issued these guidelines separately.

A 37-year-old Central Reserve Police Force jawan suffering from cancer has succumbed to COVID-19, taking the total number of deaths due to the disease in the country’s largest paramilitary force to three, officials said on Sunday. They said the jawan, a constable of the 141st battalion, died at a hospital on Friday. Only 820 monuments where religious worship takes place to re-open from Monday, clarifies culture ministry

The Union Culture Ministry on Sunday approved opening of 820 centrally protected monuments under the Archeological Survey of India which has places of worship from June 8, Minister Prahlad Patel said. The ministry clarified that as per the instructions of the ministry of home affairs, the culture ministry has decided to open only those monuments among the over 3,000 ASI-maintained monuments, where religious worship takes place such as Nila Mosque at Hauz Khas enclave, the Qutub archaeological area, Lal Gumbad in Delhi.

The Union Culture Ministry on Sunday approved opening of it’s over 3,000 Archeological Survey of India monuments from June 8, Minister Prahlad Patel said. He said all coronavirus-related protocols issued by the Union Health Ministry will be followed by the monument authorities. The  3,691 Centrally-protected monuments and archaeological sites maintained by the ASI were shut from March 17 in view of the COVID-19 crisis. Sources said that e-tickets and wearing masks might be made the norm at such sites for visitors.

Global COVID-19 toll crosses 4,00,000

The worldwide death toll from COVID-19 has surpassed 4,00,000, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University that health experts say is still an undercount because many who died were not tested for the virus. Worldwide, at least 6.9 million people have been infected by the virus, according to Johns Hopkins. The US has seen nearly 110,000 confirmed virus-related deaths and Europe has recorded over 175,000 since the virus emerged in China late last year.

The Congress on Sunday said that 25 percent COVID-19 positivity rate in Delhi indicates the onset of community transmission and this was not the right time to unlock the city. The Delhi government has decided to open restaurants and shopping malls, as well as its state borders from 8 June. Senior Congress spokesperson Ajay Maken said it was shameful that the COVID positivity rate in Delhi was the highest in the country and its recovery rate the lowest. This is because Delhi hospitals are in bad shape, he said.

Assam reports 92 new cases, 27 discharges

As many as 92 new COVID-19 positive cases reported in Assam in the last 24 hours, said Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.  Total cases in the state now stand at 2,565. However, 27 more patients  were also discharged, taking the total number of those discharged to 615 and the number of active cases stands at 1,943.

33 Maharashtra cops died of COVID-19 so far, over 2,560 infected

At least 33 Maharashtra Police personnel, including an officer, have so far died of COVID-19, a police official said on Sunday. As many as 2,562 police personnel have till now tested positive for the deadly disease in the state, he said. “Out of these, 33 personnel, including 18 of the Mumbai Police force, died of the infection,” he said.

Odisha arranges special flights to bring back stranded migrant workers from Jammu

As many as 366 stranded migrants left for Odisha on three special flights from Jammu on Sunday, thanking the Naveen Patnaik government and the Jammu and Kashmir administration for making arrangements for their return, officials told PTI. The migrants, mostly labourers, were picked up in State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) buses from various parts of the city shortly after sunrise under the supervision of Additional Deputy Commissioner, Jammu, Tahir Firdous and taken to the Jammu airport, they added. “The first flight, carrying 122 passengers, left for Odisha around 9.30 am, followed by two other flights with equal number of passengers each at 10.20 am and 11.30 am,” an airport official said.

Amit Shah to address BJP’s first virtual rally; RJD stages protest

Kicking of the the Bihar elections campaign, home minister Amit Shah will address a virtual rally – the BJP’s first – at 4 pm.

Ahead of the rally,  RJD leaders and workers staged protests, beating utensils and blowing conches against what their leader Tejashwi Yadav dubbed as the ruling party’s celebration of the devastation caused by COVID-19 and the lockdown.

Tejashwi Yadav accused the Nitish Kumar government of treating migrant workers as second class citizens and raked up the withdrawn circular by police headquarters voicing apprehension that the return of a large number of jobless labourers could pose a law and order problem.

The ruling dispensation could have used digital technology for providing relief to the millions of poor affected by the calamity. But that seems to be none of its concern. The digital rally is an obvious indication that they are merely interested in pursuing their hunger for power, he said. Yadav said the protest was aimed at ensuring that the poor, who have been hit the hardest by the pandemic, got their due.

Fujifilm says COVID-19 drug research may drag on into July

Fujifilm Holdings Corp’s research on Avigan as a potential treatment for COVID-19 may drag on until July, the company said on Sunday, a further setback in the Japanese firm’s race to find a vaccine.

After the government of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe gave up on getting approval for the drug by the end of May, the aim was to complete clinical trials this month. But researchers have only been able to get around 70 percent of the patients needed for the trials, and because it takes 28 days to get results, the process will continue until at least July, the Nikkei business daily said, citing an unnamed source.

Samba, Kathua districts lose green tags

The Jammu and Kashmir administration issued a fresh classification of the districts on Sunday, a day ahead of the implementation of the coronavirus lockdown relaxations. Kathua and Samba districts in Jammu region were dropped from the list of red zones, while Poonch and Rajouri lost their green tags. The four are now included in the list of orange zones.

An order issued by Chief Secretary BVR Subrahmanyam said there were nine districts in the red zone – Srinagar, Budgam, Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam, Shopian, Baramulla and Kupwara in Kashmir, and Ramban in Jammu.

Nine districts – Ganderbal and Bandipora in Kashmir, and Jammu, Udhampur, Kathua, Samba, Udhampur, Reasi, Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu region – are in the orange category.

Doda and Kishtwar districts in the Chenab valley in Jammu region continued to remain under the green list, the order read.

Brazil takes down COVID-19 data, hiding soaring toll

Brazil’s Health Ministry removed the data from a website that had documented the epidemic over time and by state and municipality, as President Jair Bolsonaro defended delays and changes to official record-keeping of the world’s second-largest coronavirus outbreak.. The ministry also stopped giving a total count of confirmed cases, which have shot past 6,72,000.

“The cumulative data … does not reflect the moment the country is in,” Bolsonaro said on Twitter, citing a note from the ministry. “Other actions are underway to improve the reporting of cases and confirmation of diagnoses.”

Neither Bolsonaro nor the ministry gave a reason for erasing most of the data on the covid.saude.gov.br website, which had been a key public resource for tracking the pandemic. The page was taken down on Friday and reloaded Saturday with a new layout and just a fraction of the data.

China reports six new COVID-19 cases, five of them imported infections

China reported six new cases of the novel coronavirus on Sunday, three more than the previous day.

Five of the new cases, recorded by late Saturday, involved travellers arriving from abroad, the National Health Commission (NHC) said on its website. One locally transmitted case was found in the southern island province of Hainan.

The NHC also confirmed five new asymptomatic cases, or people who are infected with the virus but do not show symptoms, compared with two the previous day. The total number of infections in China, where the virus first emerged late last year, stands at 83,036

Delhi to open borders, treat only patients from National Capital

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said in an address that Delhi’s borders with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh will be opened from Monday.

Kejriwal also said that by the end of June, Delhi will need 15,000 beds for coronavirus patients, adding that over 90 percent people from the city want only patients from the National Capital to be treated there. “Government and private hospitals will only treat people from Delhi, while hospitals run by the Centre will remain open to all. If people from other cities come to Delhi for specific surgeries, they will be treated at private hospitals,” he said.

Delhi Cabinet to discuss report by government-appointed doctors’ committee

Delhi cabinet will hold a meeting on Sunday over the report submitted by a five-member doctors’ committee constituted by the Delhi Government on the utilisation of the national capital’s health infrastructure.

The committee had submitted its report to the Delhi government on Saturday. Sources told ANI that the committee in its report said that national capital’s health infrastructure should only be used for residents.

CSIR develops indigenous nasopharyngeal swabs for COVID-19 testing

The National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), a lab under the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), said that it has developed an indigenous nasopharyngeal (NP) swabs for collecting samples from the throat cavity of COVID-19 patients.

Nasopharyngeal swab is a medical device with stringent specifications of quality, polymer grade, dimensions and sterilization. An NP swab consists of a cylindrical plastic stick with a brush-like tip of synthetic bristles/flocks. The flocking process helps align the fine bristles in a parallel orientation on the stick head, much like a tooth brush, except that this has round uniform geometry and the NP swab bristles are of micron diameter.

After confirming the correct chemical and polymer composition of NP swabs, their diameter, alignment of bristles, and sterilization method, NCL has suggested the next regulatory pathway for approval of medical devices to the company. They will be able to produce 1 lakh NP swabs per day

Kerala police to accept online complaints

With a spike in numbers of COVID-19 cases in Kerala, the state police have decided to receive complaints online to avoid public from visiting police stations physically. “Complaints received online will be resolved as soon as possible. Police also have been advised to reply complainants via digital means,” Kerala Director general of police (DGP) Lokanath Behera said.

In the backdrop of COVID-19, Kerala police also had recently made a series of administrative reforms in policing, major decision being to work with 50 percent strength in police stations and battalions. Other measures included avoiding police officers going in group during roll-call, change of shifts, parades and classes.

Migrant worker denied entry to quarantine centre, isolates in jungle

A migrant labourer spent two days in jungle after allegedly being denied entry to a quarantine centre and his village in Odisha’s Behrampur. According to a local from the village, no one helped the labourer. “He came from Chennai. He went to the police and block office but no one helped. Then, he went to the jungle,” the local told ANI.

Later, the police took him to the quarantine centre.

As per the Union Health Ministry, there are 2,608 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Odisha.

India reported the highest single-day spike of 9,971 new COVID-19 cases and 287 deaths in the last 24 hours. The total number of cases in the country is now at 2,46,628, including 1,20,406 active cases, 1,19,293 cured/discharged/migrated cases and 6,929 deaths.

Kolkata policeman, tested positive for COVID-19, dies

A constable of Kolkata Police who was undergoing treatment for COVID-19 at a state-run hospital died Saturday, a source at the health department told PTI.

The constable, who was posted at the Shakespeare Sarani police station, succumbed late Saturday evening but the cause of his death was not stated by the health department, he said. “Whether he died of any comorbidity also needed to be checked,” the source said.

On Saturday, 17 people died because of Covid-19, taking the toll in West Bengal to 311. At least 427 people have tested positive for the disease in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 7,738.

Delhi medical association hits out at FIR against Sir Ganga Ram Hospital

In a statement released on Saturday, the Delhi Medical Association slammed the Arvind Kejriwal government after the a warning of  of stern action was issued to hospitals if they refuse COVID-19 patients or indulge in “black-marketing” of beds in view of a surge in novel coronavirus cases.

“The doctors are giving their best and are helping in reducing cases every day. Instead of praising them, the government is filing case against them,” the Delhi Medical Association said in a statement said. “The doctors are already overstressed at this time of the pandemic and the government is unnecessarily putting pressure on them,” it added.

The statement by the medical body came after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, addressing an online media briefing on Saturday, said some hospitals are lying about their availability of beds and warned of “strong action” against the hospitals. The medical body also condemned the FIR filed against Sir Ganga Ram Hospital for alleged violation of the novel coronavirus testing guidelines.

Meanwhile, DMA president Dr BB Wadhwa also listed some demands:

• To appoint DMA professionals with the Delhi government officials to look after the care facilities.
• Provide adequate number of testing facilities for earlier detection of Covid-19 patients.
• Incase of Covid-19 death, a prompt and efficient system to transport and cremate the body as per guidelines.
• Nodal officer for every region who will facilitate overall functioning of covid care.

Delhi may have 1 lakh COVID-19 cases by June-end

Delhi is likely to see at least one lakh COVID-19 cases by end of June as per a projection made by the five-member committee formed by the Delhi government. Based on the projection, the committee has asked the government to arrange an additional 15,000 beds to cater to the needs of the patients in the national capital.

Dr Mahesh Verma, chairman of the committee, told ANI, “We have studied the trends of other cities like Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Chennai. Our calculations project more than one lakh cases in the national capital by the end of June. We want that no patient should suffer. We are getting prepared to combat the virus.”

Another official said, “Delhi’s doubling rate is 15 days. Based on our projections, the number of cases would increase. About 25 percent of patients will require hospitalisation. Most of the patients would have a medical condition of ‘hypoxia’ and 5 percent would need a ventilator. Hence, we have advised the government to arrange the maximum facility of oxygen supply for patients.” He added that Delhi would need about 42,000 beds by 15 July.

South Korea reported 57 additional coronavirus cases, marking a second day in a row that its daily jump is above 50 as authorities struggle to suppress a spike in infections in the densely populated Seoul area. The new cases took the country’s total to 11,776 with 273 deaths.

South Korea’s caseload peaked in late February and early March when it recorded hundreds of new cases each day. But the outbreak has significantly eased amid aggressive tracing, testing and treatment. The new cases in recent weeks have been linked to nightclubs, an e-commerce warehouse, church gatherings and door-to-door sellers in the Seoul metropolitan area.

Kochi convention centre converted into COVID-19 facility

Adlux Convention Centre at Angamaly in Kochi has been converted into a 200-bed COVID-19 care centre, in the wake of an increase in the number of cases in the state. The centre will start functioning from next week, ANI reported.
