WHO chief lauds countries that broke chain of COVID-19 transmission

WHO Chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Friday said “in Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, New Zealand, Italy, Spain, South Korea and even in Dharavi, a densely packed area in Mumbai, a strong focus on community engagement and the basics of testing, tracing, isolating and treating all those that are sick is key to breaking the chains of transmission and suppressing the virus,” News18 reported.

7.862 new COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra today

Maharashtra on Friday reported a record single-day jump of 7,862 coronavirus cases, as well as 226 deaths due to the infection. The total number of cases in the state rose to 2,38,461 and the toll stands at 9,893. The state health Department said the recovery rate has improved, rising to 55.62 percent.

“Today the world recorded 12 million cases. In the last six weeks cases have more than doubled,” said Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Friday.

Due to the rising cases of coronavirus in the Kalyan, Dombivali, Thane areas, the municial corporations on Friday extended the lockdown that was to end on 12 July to 19 July.

“This “total” lockdown, as part of which most shops were closed and essential items ordered to be home delivered, was enforced on July 2 for a period of ten days. It has been extended for 7 more days,” The Indian Express reported.

Bombay HC seeks report on measures against COVID-19 at Byculla jail

The Bombay High Court on Friday sought information from the NIA and Maharashtra government about social distancing and other safeguards implemented to prevent coronavirus spread at the Byculla women’s jail.

Activist and lawyer Sudha Bharadwaj, an accused in the Elgar Parishad case, is lodged in the prison. The court was hearing a plea filed by Bharadwaj, who has been in jail since September 2018, challenging a special court’s order rejecting her bail application. A bench led by Justice S S Shinde directed the authorities to file reply on jail conditions and health safeguards by 17 July, the next date of hearing. Bharadwaj approached the HC after the special court for National Investigation Agency (NIA) denied her bail on May 29 this year.

The containment zones in West Bengal under lockdown wore a deserted look on Friday, The Indian Express reported “as most people preferred to stay indoors on the second day of the seven-day lockdown clamped on the state’s containment zones”.

Yogi Adityanath asks for rapid antigen tests to be conducted in ’every household’

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday asked health officials to conduct rapid antigen tests in “every household” during the three-day cleanliness campaign that started from Friday.

“A special cleanliness campaign has been initiated from July 10-13 to create awareness about COVID-19, vector-borne diseases and other ailments. Under the campaign, door-to-door surveillance should be done and rapid antigen tests should be conducted in every household,” a statement quoting the chief minister said.

PTI also reported that he said that the number of lab technicians should be increased and 15,000 rapid antigen tests should be conducted per day.

CJI says SC can’t take up every matter with differing facts

Speaking about the migrant workers’ crisis that was triggered after the coronavirus lockdown was imposed in March, Chief Justice of India (CJI) SA Bobde was  quoted by News18  as saying that “it is not for the Supreme Court to take up each and every matter at the first instance, especially when facts differ from one state to another”.

“Lawyers and people have expressed disappointment that the Supreme Court did not urgently entertain various matters such as migrant workers’ case etc. But they should know when facts differ from states to states, it shouldn’t be the Supreme Court that can hear a case,” said he was quoted as saying by report.

“We find it very odd that we have to say it as a bench that it is for a jurisdictional court to look into these facts and decide at the first instance. We should be approached only in the second instance where we also have the benefit of the high court judgment too,” he added.

Bolivia’s interim President Jeanine Anez announced on Thursday that she has tested positive for coronavirus. “I’ve tested positive for COVID-19, I’m fine, I will work from isolation,” she tweeted.

The 53-year-old said in a video on Twitter that she would remain in quarantine for 14 days before taking another test.

Anez becomes the second South American president in a matter of days to contract the coronavirus after Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro announced his positive result on Tuesday.
