UK teen police commissioner steps down over offensive tweets

London: A 17-year-old who was appointed Britain’s first youth police commissioner has stepped down amid a scandal over offensive material she posted on Twitter. Paris Brown was named last week to a 15,000 pound ($22,800) a year role intended to build bridges between young people and police in Kent county, southern England. The offending tweets — posted before Brown assumed her role — have been deleted. Brown said Tuesday that she was not racist or homophobic, but had “fallen into the trap of behaving with bravado on social networking sites.” She said she had decided to quit the role because the media attention would hinder her performance.
