Tata Teleservices slams Assocham on dual-technology

New Delhi: Tata Teleservices (TTL) today slammed Assocham stating that the industry chamber has sought cancellation of its dual-technology status in a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

In a press release, the telecom firm also alleged that the two letters, to the prime minister and Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal, “serves the interests of a handful of powerful members with the industry body”.[caption id=“attachment_321709” align=“alignleft” width=“380” caption=“Infighting. When contacted, Assocham denied having written such a letter. The industry body’s spokesperson DS Rawat said, “There is no such letter.”

“Tata Teleservices has protested strongly against Assocham’s letter seeking cancellation of its dual-technology status,” TTL, which is also a member of Assocham, said in a statement.

TTL provides both CDMA and GSM technology based telecom services to its customers.

“Tata Teleservices has also expressed the pain that Assocham in its letters last week, sought to give the impression that TTL and one prominent member of AUSPI were opposed to refarming of spectrum in 800 Mhz and 900 Mhz bands when in fact both these companies strongly support it,” it said.

Association of Unified Telecom Service Providers of India (AUSPI) is the representative industry body of Unified Access Service Licensees providing telecom services in the country with CDMA and GSM technology.

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has recommended spectrum refarming of 800 Mhz and 900 Mhz band to 1900 Mhz and 1800 Mhz band.

TTL further said that “industry bodies such as Assocham should not write letters without confirming facts, or on matters which are sub-judice. Further, it is shocking that Assocham has written a letter seeking to harm the interests of one of its own member companies.”
