Johannesburg: South Africa's Olympic committee says it has made the first move to put the struggling national athletics federation under administration.

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee made the decision to suspend the Athletics South Africa board on Saturday following a long-running dispute among the ASA leadership. ASA suspended some board members last week because of in-fighting in the federation.

Olympic committee president Gideon Sam says his body had appointed an administrator to temporarily run ASA in a move that came on the second day of the South African national track championships.

Sam says "we have to cut out the nonsense going on in some of our federations."

ASA president James Evans announced the suspensions of six board members last week amid an internal power struggle.
