SpiceJet spreads wings in North India

New Delhi: After connecting southern India with its newly acquired Bombardier Q400 NextGen turboprop aircraft, low-cost carrier SpiceJet will launch new services using the planes from the national capital to various north Indian cities from next week.

In the first phase of north India expansion, SpiceJet will connect to Amritsar, Chandigarh, Srinagar and Indore, a statement from the airline said.[caption id=“attachment_367531” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] ![](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/spicejet-afp.jpg "INDIA-ECONOMY-AVIATION") New destinations. The carrier also announced that New Delhi would be its third base after Hyderabad and Chennai for its new Bombardier Q400 NextGen turboprop fleet to serve affordable air connectivity for more destinations in North India.

The airline said it would add more cities on its network in the coming days.

“With our expanded network, SpiceJet would be the only low-cost airline to have such a strong presence across India with 36 destination airports domestically,” SpiceJet CEO Neil Mills said.

SpiceJet had placed an order for 15 such aircraft.

After taking the delivery of five aircraft last week from Bombardier in Canada, the airlines has shored up its flee of such planes to 12. The aircraft can accommodate 78 passengers and is widely accepted as the best short-haul plane globally.

Each SpiceJet aircraft has been named after a particular spice. The five new aircraft will be christened as Dhaniya, Haldi, Javitri, Jaiphal and Laung and all are financed through Export Development Corporation (EDC) of Canada.

SpiceJet aims to further enhance air connectivity to Tier-II and Tier-III cities and towns.
